Hemerocallis fulva

When we moved to our farm, our neighbour gave me a piece of her obedience plant (which has never done much for me). She unknowingly also gave me a piece of her daylily, hemerocallis fulva. It was a single orange with a yellow eye. The colors blended in very nicely and I thought it not to bad. I've now had it 7 years and it has changed quite a bit don't you think? The first pic is before and the second was taken today.

I honestly didn't think a daylily could change that much! Does the h. fulva have a habit of changing that way? Marg

The first picture appears to be H. fulva 'Europa', and the second picture appears to be H. fulva 'Kwanso'. Maybe you unknowingly got a piece of both and the 'Kwanso' is winning.
Some daylilies do bloom single and then double later in the season, but I don't think that's the case here.

Hi Ed. Thanks for the answer. It's nice to know that the first one is 'Europa', I'll add it to my records. As far as 'Kwanso' goes, I don't know where that would come from. My neighbor only had one lily and I never had any of that kind. The only thing I know about it is that it has somehow changed. I didn't think it would change that much. It started throwing out doubles last year but this year it has totally changed. Can the h. fulva cross with regular daylilies? I have several others but they are not near this one. Marg

Rudy, the reason I was curious was that Hemerocallis fulva is listed in "Plant Invaders of Mid-Atlantic Natural Areas", so somewhere not too far from me, and possibly right by me daylilies are an issue. I'm not nuts about where I have some daylilies in my yerd, and if they were seriously invasive, that might give me the push to pull them out. Due to DH's preferences (and sometimes my just falling in love with a plant), I will probably continue to plant exotics, but I do want to have the information the plant's invasiveness status if I can. I think the consensus here is that the hybrids aren't a serious problem. It's good to know since they're used so extensively in my neighborhood. Yes I am actually going to be very very picky when time comes for us to choose a house with the real estate agent. I also already know which town I'm going to live in. Its only like 10 minutes away from my current house. Here's my plan and restrictions: Small house. Big enough front+back yard. House must be in full sun(no shaded by big deciduous trees) Land is flat. No slope, no hills, no crater, no downhill. FLAT. Which means the soil will most likely be well draining. Unless its clay Have very little pre-plant life. All grass yard is fine for me No big deciduous trees on property(black walnut cannot be even near my property) Preferably no pre-existing conifers.(cedars are ok) Have space to make bamboo hedge on right and left side of property and backyard No vole population So yea I'm already semi-planned for location wise. Only problem is IF I can find such house...

Sigh - this is the story of ALL my gardens, Lin. I was absentmindedly watching Gardeners World (although I cannot abide Monty Bloody Don) and watched, with astonishment, as he split a gigantic astrantia - must have been 3feet square...whereas none of my plants ever reach that size or maturity because I am continually arsing around, chopping and changing, having huge 5 minute crazes and falling in love with this plant and that...for nanoseconds until the next one comes along. Consequently, apart from the vast rambling roses, I never have nice mature clumps of anything. Growing everything from seed is an issue too since it can take 4 years for a plant to reach a size where it can be divided...and by then, I have moved on to the next big thing. I have sort of resigned myself to basically having a large collection of plants but nothing which can, in any honesty, be called a garden. The very best I can manage is to plan a particular area (small) and actually stick to the plan...so right now, I have saved, swapped or ordered seeds for my woodland clearing, to hide one of the poplar stumps...so salvias, nepeta, perovskia...and if the deer don't chomp away, caryopteris (but not optimistic on that last one).

Hi Marg,
The fulvas are notorious for showing up uninvited. Both are triploids and reproduce vegetatively, not sexually. So I don't think that's the case. My best guess is you received pieces of both and over the seven years, the 'Kwanso' is overtaking the 'Europa'. Doubles are in general more vigorous than the single varieties. I like the double best, so hopefully do you.
