Natural Backyard

We recently purchased a home with a "natural backyard." That is, trees, bushes and a large quantity of underbrush. We are very pleased with the trees and bushes but the underbrush is quite extensive and appears to be out of control. What would be the quickest and easiest way to remove the underbrush and are we getting involved in a futile effort? That is, will it regrow rapidly? Is there anything that could deter it's growth? Thanks for your replies.
