Buds drying up and falling off

Hi, I'm new to this forum, thought this was the place to come for an answer for a problem I'm having with my some of my Daylilies this year.

Buds start to form then dry up and fall off, not all of them just some of them. If all the buds on a scape do this the stem itself dies back a bit. Some of the buds on the same scape on some form and bloom with no problems at all. Is this a fungal problem? The leaves are fine, nice and healthy. No bugs that I can see.

I'm not alone with this problem several others I have been talking to are having the same problem. We did have a really lousy spring weather wise, I have not had this problem before so any help will be much appreciated.

I have noticed in my area (Hot ol' Texas, US) that when the weather changes from nice, cool, wet type weather very quickly to hot and dry, that I get bud drop.

I know that the other thing you might have are itty bitty bugs called thirps. Very hard to see with the nekked eye. They like to hide inside the buds. If you look at a bloomed flower, you would see them waaaaayyy down inside in the throat of the flower. They are kind of a tannish color and about the size of an exclamation mark !! Tiny. Not saying you have this, just one thing to keep your eyes out for....

Thanks for the response, I'm hoping it's the weather thing, we went from winter into some fairly high temperatures like overnight, we really didn't have a spring this year. I'll investigate the thrip theory too, thanks again.

I've transplanted mature fruit-bearing apple trees many times, and I've hardly ever seen one bear fruit within a year after transplant. The only exception was with a mature Lodi which bore only 1 apple the first year after transplant, and that single apple was quite deformed. What I've noticed about apples, is if their roots are disturbed at all, they generally won't bear for a year. If pollination is okay, I'm sure you'll get fruit next year. Good luck.

RM, my "Stuttgart" turned out to be a plain leaved green variety! I got it from ebay. Is that where yours came from too? There were two in the package and one of them was rotten when i got it and never came up. Nancy

Thanks! I think it's the foam and the soil. I found a thread on the container gardening board that mentioned some major problems with the walmart soil which is what I repotted with. So... I'm going to get some lighter soil.. tear our all that foam and repot and take a few cuttings to be sure the plant is preserved one way or another! LOL Thanks a bunch and I'll let you know how my plant in a week or so! As for over fertilized.. I don't think so even though I do feed it weekly bc I tried to fertilize to see if it helped with the leaf dropping. So that problem started long before I started fertilizing at all. I think it's bad soil that doesn't drain well combined with foam stuck in around the roots. Well! I have work to do! Thanks again! Michelle

Thanks everybody, Shanna, for me it has been a fast grower, I think Garbos correct and if your other hoyas are doing well put it with them. Garbo, I love the leaves too. Thanks for the correct spelling. Pirate Girl, Here are a few more pictures so you can see the size. The bulk of the plant hangs about 15" and it is planted a 3" x 3" ceramic pot with the attached saucer. I thought I had too much pearlite in the soil but obviously it is OK. Today one of the other clusters started too bloom. I love these plants Jane Try as I may I cant figure how to flip the pictures. Sorry

Lack of water will do it every time. Make sure they have adequate water.

Have you checked inside the dying buds for maggots since you're in British Columbia where the daylily gall midge is a problem.

Daniel, it's to late to check for gall midge this year, what's left of the buds seem to be Ok. I will definitely check for this next year if the same problem arises, Thanks for the information that's one pest I wasn't aware of.

I just found out there is a beneficial nematode Steinernema Feltiae that can be used to help get rid of this Daylily pest. It can be applied now, spraying them on the foliage, letting it soak into the surrounding soil. So just in case I'll be spraying tomorrow.

Welcome to the forum, aftermidnight. I was on your beautiful island a couple of years ago -- loved all the flowers everywhere. Wish I was there, instead of this 100+ weather here in southeast Texas!

Thanks for the welcome najoba, I've only had Daylilies for a few year with the exception of a real oldie Frans Hal, I think? I have a few Siloams amongst others but nothing like the beauties I've seen on this forum. I have seen some of Newyorkrita's on another forum which totally blew me away so thought I check this forum out. I have decided to plant more Daylilies in the front garden so I've been lurking here and making a list, not that the beauties I've seen here are available up here but one can dream.
