Peak bloom coming to an end

This has been an unusual bloom season. Some of my older CV's have been showing shorter scapes, and less buds than usual. I think that's because of the wild winter we had. Even the Praying Mantis (that we have in abundance) seem to be smaller than usual for this time of year. I'm hoping they have enough time to mature and lay eggs this fall.

Red Blooded was planted in early June.

Irish Jackpot was also planted in June.

Alan Lane Agin....always a very good pod setter.

Steve Moldovon....seems to change appearance a lot, some days are better than others.

Jennifer Trimmer seedling that I really like, but like it's parent, it just hates to set pods.

Wild Irish seedling looked so velvety this morning.

Yet another Red Friday seedling....has a great scape and bud count, crazy frothy teeth, but the blooms don't always open well. This was a good day for this one.

This is one I'm planning to register....a Sense Of Wonder kid

Linda - My scapes were shorter and a lot of blooms were smaller. I didn't think to check and see if the insects were smaller, too! LOL I really like the patterned eye on STEVE MOLDOVAN. Is that weather related? The Red Friday seeding sure is pretty. It's too bad it doesn't open well sometimes. The Jennifer Trimmer and Sense of Wonder seedlings are pretty too.

I hate peak bloom ending. That means less photos from everyone! I love Irish Jackpot. That one is new to me.

I'm far away from my Italian garden here in Florida, but I'll be back by mid-August and will get a good dose of the summer garden. We're continuing on with the anomalous weather that began in April of 2006, with rain IN JUNE--unheard of, it's supposed to be hot and dry. If it keeps up like this, we will cease to be Mediterranean Italy and become something like--what? Possibly the Texas hill country? Houston, with hills? This year I've been finding out about blackspot for the first time. At least my husband hasn't had to water the young plants in the ground, and the hay crop (this is our mulch and sole fertilizer) is tremendous. All the same, I'd like the weather to return to what it used to be. I've read that if the Mediterranean warms up much more, it might start to generate hurricanes. Just imagine. The world is changing. All this is to say that I don't know what to expect when I get back. But if the garden is halfway on its usual schedule, there will be buddleia and lavender in flower and lots of dusty, deep green foliage of box, yew, and persimmon; some clematis in bloom; the Japanese anemones starting to blossom. It'll do for me. I like my plants even when they aren't performing. We'll enjoy some pleasant chats as I weed them and put on a new layer of mulch from our supply of abundant, cheap hay. Maybe I don't care ENOUGH how well my roses bloom. The thought of the weeding I'll have to do is rather frightening, but then everything will look so wonderful when it's done. And if the roses have grown as much as I suspect they will have with all this rain, they will have made good progress in their task of getting to a size where they shade out the weeds. Ha. Life is good. Melissa P.S. Char rose's bit about tomatoes and homemade bread is absolutely true.

Just popping in to say 'THANKS' to all of you for your comments! The kitty family thanks you as well! They do indeed have very different personalities. Lily is very vocal, high-strung and a keen hunter who prefers to be outside. She is also 14 yrs. old so she's getting boney and crabby...LOL. Fat Cat Nemo is just a big loveable teddybear, very laid-back and friendly. I think you can all see for yourselves that his favorite pastime is eating & sleeping. But he does make us laugh a lot, especially when we find him asleep in some ridiculous pose. Zeus craves human contact and is the most loving furbaby I have ever had. He has to be with me at all times, on my lap or sleeping on my pillow at night and is very quiet and serene. He stares into my eyes as if he does indeed love me as much as I love him and he is very smart. Debra, 'Laughing Lion' is brand-new for me this year and I love it. It is an introduction by Christine Weitz from Gladsome Gardens in NY. I bought several of her intros this year. Thanks to all, Celeste

Rita, I know my zone is colder than yours, but I doubt that your NY zone 7 is as long as the more southern zone 7s, so I thought my experience might be a little helpful for you. In my zone 5 garden my small collection of established hybrid daylilies (90 varieties, perhaps a 120 plants) put out their first blooms within a five to six week period, usually starting around the beginning of the last week of June to the end of July or very early part of August. I do have a few that bloom on either side of this, such as Stella that starts earlier than most things here & Autumn Minaret which blooms much later, but most things bloom within that general period. Most of my daylilies are listed as EM, M, or ML. Of these the EMs usually bloom in the first part of the season, usually within the first two weeks, & the MLs nearer the end. The Ms are sometimes in the middle, but vary quite a bit, with some of them quite early and quite a few of my older Ms, blooming the last week or so. Of your list I only own two, Wineberry Candy & Joylene Nichole. Joylene although listed as M, always blooms early for me, usually the 2nd or 3rd one to open. Wineberry Candy does open in the first half of the season, but quite close to the middle. This year the daylily season started a bit earlier than usual for me, with Siloam Double Classic opening on June 19th, sometimes she is as late as July 4th. Joylene was open by June 24th, also a bit early for her. By the time we got to the middle most things were within a day or two of last years opening date. I generally have bloom into the mid part of August, with a few things like Rosy Returns still putting up scapes in October. I get only minimal rebloom on most of my daylilies, except on a few of the Apps flowers. I took a picture of a scape on RR on 10/9/06 & it actually managed to open two of the blooms. One of the ones that I do manage to get some rebloom on is Siloam Doodlebug (EM), although she is not listed as a rebloomer at Tinker's, she starts putting up new scapes within a week or two of my cutting down all the finished bloom stalks. It may be that she is just putting up scapes on new growth. I get this occasionally on other EMs that I own.

Best wishes for the new addition. New babies are so fun!! These are all so pretty as always. I also have Gilded by Grace and keep it just because I can, not because it is an outstanding performer, a trend I think I see in other gardens. It has never multiplied well but blooms are always perfect when it does. (Perhaps you could add Siloam Amazing Grace for your daughter!!) Night Beacon is in the forgotten bed. Sometimes it blooms, sometimes not. Gingham Maid is always huge, and another reliable oldie I like. Smugglers Fire looks terrific. Great photos-can't wait to see more with maybe a little one thrown in!!! Kate

You have really got some beauties blooming.I really like that IRISH JACKPOT. and them seedlings are gorgeous.I hate to see the daylilies stop blooming too, a long wait till next spring.I had a bunch didn't bloom at all and hardly any reblooms this year, too, but, maybe next year will be better.

I like your seedling with that pencil edge. Cranberry color eye? Very nice.

Some the mids and lates are starting but many of the others are nearly done. Some with short scapes and low budcount and others an over abundance of scapes but several being top heavy in buds. Very odd year but I'm glad to see color.

Red Blooded looks good. The evergreen, Irish Jackpot, has a very ornate edge; hope it flourishes in the North. What is the size and scape height on the Sense of Wonder seedling?

Mantis_oh, The stats on that Sense Of Wonder seedling are 28" scape with 4 way branching, 20 buds, 6" bloom. Pic below is of 2 blooms. As for me, I really love loud, big, and gaudy......love this one for it's size, scape, fantastic fertility, and a lovely simple sense of elegance. Guess I'm somewhat conflicted. :-) Moving this out of the seedling bed next spring, so I can have a better idea of how it does.

The Japanese beetles were later this year too...but that's a good thing.

Hard to choose a favorite from among your pictures, but I'd go with one of the last two seedlings.

Beautiful beautiful daylilies and seedlings! Red Blooded looks like a nice red color. What an edge on Irish Jackpot!
Seedlings look great. Love that RF seedling especially. Your last one is a pretty one too, nice edge.
You have two dls with Irish in the name :)

Some really nice seedlings. I think the one out of Wild Irish is my favorite. Irish Jackpot and Red Blooded round out my top 3......Maryl
