It was originally a two foot high plant with loads of grapes on it, but it got moved, I forgot about it, and when I found it I had to cut it back to a two inch stick just to find any green beneath the bark :( Maybe it thinks it is spring. I was going to bring it indoor and keep it in the outhouse when the temps start to reach freezing. Its really sunny and doesn't get hot in there in the winter. Will I have to worry about anything while its indoors. I grow citrus mainly, and if they are in a sunny position when their roots are at less that 55F they drop their leaves - will I experience any winter leaf drop or anything similar with this grape? It can be done but is not going to be the easiest thing for the average home gardener to accomplish :-)) Chrysanthemums are very sensitive to day length with regards to their bloom cycle and forced mums typically undergo a rather complicated lighting program that essentially fools the plant into thinking that it's an appropriate time to bloom. There are also some other factors involved, usually rather highly controlled temperatures, a specific fertilization schedule and applications of growth hormones. It helps a lot if one has a greenhouse and the necessary supplies to accomplish all of this - tough to do in a home setting. I'm inclined to think cool spring temps are the culprit, as several of my mums are also budding out of season. Hakone grasses are also forming flower heads months too early, which I've been trimming so as to maintain vigor through the rest of the growing season.

'Monch' is a cultivar of Aster frickartii and is known for its long-blooming habit. I've had mine for many years in USDA z. 4, so it should be hardy for you. I would recommend planting it before mid-summer, though. I've grown all three varieties of Wood's asters, pink, purple and light blue. The pink and light blue are the most vigorous for me. Mine grow in fairly tidy clumps, very trouble-free. 'October Skies' is a cultivar of Aster oblongifolius, very drought tolerant and has quite woody stems. Mine sprawls over quite a large area before it finally bloooms in mid fall. Not what you call a tidy plant. I grow Hillside/Sheffield mum and it is longer blooming than any of my asters, except possibly 'Monch'. It is light pink, almost peachy-pink, and very attractive IMHO. Highly recommended. Another hardy mum that I grow is Mei-Kyo, a small double pink, late-blooming. Both these "mums" are well-known for their hardiness.
