Bushel Gourds How to Dry Them?

I have always had bird house gourds, and hung them in the garage. I thought you had to hang them, and not let them touch each other.

Well, this year I tryed some bushel, my goats have knocked some off before we had some frost. Will, that hurt them?

After the frost, I took them off, and found out how heavy they are, some are as big around as one(they are huge)I have to bring one in find out how much it weights.

How in the world do I dry these guys? I can't hang them, there is no neck to drill holes!

I wanted to make some bird houses, but man three to four families can move in at the same time!!!!!!!!!

Sandie-I wish I had some of your big gourds! I have a hard time finding them in this part of the country. The only advice I can give you about drying is to sit them off the ground so the air can circulate all around,like on pallets.I think the ones the goats knocked off will be ok.I certainly wouldn't drill holes anywhere in them.Put them in a dry place if possible and never dry them in your house.The mold can be really bad for your sinuses and lungs.Since they are so big it will probably take several months for them to dry,depending on temperatures and such.They are dry when the seeds rattle inside.What are you going to make with them? Sorry it has taken so long to get back to you. But, my father-in-law had a stroke, and we all are trying to go up to the hospital, take mom there and bring her home.
So, right now I have not even a clue!
I will come up with something when the time comes that he is home, and everything is back to normal.

grdngramma, I'm sending you an email. I like your offer. Tlowery, I grew them in MD several years ago. They were planted on the west side of my porch to help provide shade. They grew all the way up and across the roof maybe 20 or 25 feet. It is very hot and humid there so I have some concern about growing it here in dry, arid AZ but I want to try. Ehh I have seen gourd seeds be stubborn and hold out for a month but that's rare given the temp is up to speed. If it were me, I'd open up one planting site and rummage around for seeds.. If they are there but not sprouted then soften up the plant site, soak the seeds for a few hrs of room temp water and replant and keep moist. If you've got the seeds might want to add a new one or two for good measure. (always nip the extras before they get too big, rather than having none at all) If the seeds are swollen or sprouted then you've only uprooted one planting site. Heck I've gotten impatient and replanted gourd seeds just to have ALL of them come up at the same time.. Nothing like having 5-6 plants sprouting outta a mound made for 2 or 3. (and if you can feed them well enough they can make pretty decent gourds even that heavily planted) We've got 6 types of gourds growing this year.. (hoping for some funky hybrids)

They should be dry in about 6 months after they are harvested. It has been our experience that they will dry before the apple gourds. Just be sure to leave them on the vine until the stem is brown and very dry. Jan

If you have pallets or something that will allow air to circulate, they'd do best sitting on those to dry with a turn every few days. You're lucky to have the bushels. I've grown luffas, apple gourds, turban gourds and birdhouse but haven't been lucky enough to get the bushel gourds to grow when I try them. I'm sorry to hear about your FIL.
