I have never seen Prairie Dropseed for sale where I live (North Carolina), but saw it all over the place while visiting my brother in Chicago area earlier this summer. It is a beautiful grass and I would plant some if I could find around here. I almost bought some to bring home with me, and regret not doing so. It has a nice fine texture and weeping form.

It's on my list of seeds to try. I love the look.

I am charmed by this grass every time I walk into the garden. A winsome little fella.

I want to move mine to a more prominent spot and need more of it when I do. (I have but one.) How/where do you grow yours? Groundcover? Specimen? Full sun or partial? Grown from seed, did it take long for your plants to mature? (Mine, bought potted through mail-order, took about 3 years.) Did you sow in situ or in pots?

Hi dawgie, I never see it in nurseries either, although our local wholesale nursery has it listed in their catalog. I found the seed at Menards of all places and had never even heard of Prairie Dropseed but thought I would give it a try!

Donn, I didn't have very good germination on this for some reason. I sowed several pkts. of seed and only had one germinate. Not sure if this is a hard one to germ. or if the seed was bad? Who knows?!

BruMeta- Mine is just plopped into a mixed border in front of some echinacea, in full sun. I like the fine texture of the Sporobolos w/the ech. leaves. The below pic. isn't the greatest but gives you an idea. I would eventually like to spread it throughout my borders as an accent plant. This plant was winter sown the winter before last so this is its 2nd yr. I've been really happy w/its growth since I've read that it can be slow to mature. I sowed a pack of seed/pot (actually used the bottom 1/3 of a paper milk carton) and set it out in late winter, Feb./ early March if I remember correctly. Hope that helps!

This is my second year of watching it grow. Neat little plant. It's at the border near some Tropicanna with a 'Marquerite' sweet potato vine just nearing its edges (by mistake, but, looks cool).

I like the prairie dropseed. I just happen to stumble across it at a local garden center (on a table of plants for $2---they had many of the prairie dropseed---shoulda grabbed a couple more). Never had heard of it before (even though I am fairly new to gardening), but thought I would give it a try---especially for the price.
Mine did not turn color last fall (probably since I had just planted it)---so, am anxious to see if it turns that nice "orangish" fall color this year.

IMO, it's a keeper.
