My hubby and I are hoping to move to Athens next year. I'd love to connect with other gardeners. I have been gardening for many years but every area is different. Are there any local garden clubs? If not, any advice? I read that you have clay soil. That will be very different for me. I am used to sand. Thanks for your help.

Nancy, the Athens area is chock full of unique nurseries. And UGA has its College of Horticulture. On campus are the phenomenal UGA Trial Gardens. Think that once you get to Athens you'll find the local clubs. The Garden Clubs of GA have their HQ there.

Only after years and years of amending it so you can work in it in the wet early spring and middle of summer when it gets hard as a rock if not properly amended.

just wanted to add that Hanson serves not only all of the US but CA as well. Originally when I posted, I thought Athens referred to a style collection as opposed to the regional plant. Nonetheless, with all the people on this board I've seen from Texas (and down south in general) and all the general expertise I figured I'd get a few people who had run across them or even had them on a consideration list at some point. I'll pretend that was a genuine "good luck" wish. thanks anyway.

can i mix athens gray marble with white subway tile?

As you see in my second picture, the marble is on top of 4x4s. I put the pencil in because I thought it needed the line to define the two materials, and it mimicked the bottom of the chair rail detailing. What I hadn't counted on was that the thickness of the marble causing layout problems like you are anticipating. So, I made the pencil just a bit raised from the 4x4, so it would transition to the depth of the marble. I laid the 4x4 as normal and the marble as normal. The pencil, I laid thick to help with the transition. Tiling is a good exercise in humbleness. Nothings perfect and my tile job reflects that. I remind myself everyday as I see my tiny imperfections and remember laying this tile or that tile. The montauk is black and I got it at Home Depot via special order at 2.99/sf. It was 12x12 and I cut it to 12x6.

Mariannese, No I'm not particularly bothered, especially because of the prevailing northerly winds and because I am sort of perpendicular off the landing-take off line. If the winds come from the west or in a still night I can hear the jet engines during take off but, still, it is not really a nuisance more a reminder that the airport is there. Sitting on my balcony though, I can see the lights of aircraft approaching. Marlorena, Yes, there are vineyards, large vegetable plots, fig and pistachio cultivations there. There are also ancient ruins, most importantly the Temple of Artemis of Vravron. There's also a wetland nature reserve with bird wildlife which you can see at the upper left of the picture (the shallow bay). http://www.athenskey.com/vravrona.html

Does anyone grow dactylicapnos scandens, Athens Yellow in Calif?

Otherwise known as Climbing Bleeding Heart. I just saw an article which mentioned it in the AHS magazine. It says that the cultivar Athens Yellow tolerates warmer summers. So, wondering if anyone does, or knows where it is available. Jackie

Nancy,

You can glean a lot of knowledge by reading some of the articles in the link below. It isn't a cake walk, but when you look at the lushness in Athens and my area north of Atlanta,plus plus, you'll COME TO LOVE IT. Ha. There, I've said it again. Have been gardening in this soil type for over 30 years. It can be a PIB as yolos says, but there are solutions.
