How can I tell the difference in flowers?

My pumpkin plants are finally starting to flower. How do I tell the difference between male and female flowers? If you have pics, that would be great.

Very simple.. you'll see a baby pumpkin at the bottom of a female flower. It will look like a little knob.

On the male flower, its just a skinny stem at the bottom, no fruit. A majority of flowers are male (the ones without fruit). It's always a waiting game for the female flowers to come out.

Some Haworthia, do have teeth, fine hairs, spots, windows on tips, Gasteria are larger smoother, mostly, leaves with spots. Many good books on the three species. Many of these will color up also with good sun. Haworthia, mostly clumps, some have soft teeth, all colors of leaves in good sun. Leaf will grow to a tip and not rounded on most species. Too many to give you a run down. Aloe can grow into trees, singles, some clump. Aloe flowers are very colorful, red ,yellow, variegated. Some are branched, or spikes, too many species to give you a run down. Howorthia flowers usually white, one or two are pink, with small soft leaves full of water, many you can see through when held up to the sun light. Most can be grown in a small 4" pot all of their life. Either 3-4 have a perfume smell to the flower. Aloe most cannot be grown in small pots, only a few. Gasteria most must have at least a 8" pot, a few can do well in a 4" pot, if you know what you are doing. Mine are all dormant at this time of year, Gasteria and Haworthia, will appreciate some shade this time of year, and they like to be kept cool, they are dormant. They will start to grow new roots when it gets cool here in October. Gasteria have them hanging down, usually red/orange with perhaps yellow on the ends. hmm, i think i have catnip myself, its lemony (probably lemon scented catnip) upright growth but with triangular serated leaves, its been threataning me with flowers for weeks now and is covered in buds, but none have opened. i think it has pinky-purpley flowers. i bought it last year and it grew about 6" tall and had many stems, this year only 1 stem, but that stem is about 2'6" and branched all over with flower buds covering it. i gave some to one of the cats to test it for reactivity, (not all cats are reactive to catnip) it took hte leaf, sniffed it, picked it up, chewed it. i thought oh its releasing the scent. nope it hten ate the leafe made a choking noise and wandered off. ??? *is confused by foolish cat*

Tigerdawn when you put your cursor on the photo and the little box pops up go down and click on the Html box and highlight it, then press Control and C for copy. To place the link where you want the photo to appear just put your cursor on the spot and press Control P for paste and the photo will appear. Your plant has very light coloured leaves compared with Hoya DS-70 even when grown in bright light. What is the leaf surface like, smooth or soft like velvet? There is a good chance you have another Hoya species. The leaves look too pointed to be Hoya incurvula or brevialata but that could just be the growing conditions especially if you are growing slightly dryish and in high light. How can I tell if my eggplant flower has been pollinated?

IME experience, if it was pollinated, the flower petals will dry and fall off but if you look closely the small green ovule remains. If not pollinated the whole bloom browns and falls off from where it was attached to the pedicle. Not easy to distinguish unless you know what to look for so sadly it's mostly wait and see. Best insurance is to hand pollinate the blooms yourself. That way you know. Dave

Sid, I use BBCodeXtra, a free Firefox add-on. I don't know if it works with the newer Firefox; I'm using 3.6.20.
Right-click on the url; select "xhtmlXtra" on this forum, then select "url." Also does italics, underlinings, images, other stuff.

You always have the option to paste a single url into the "Optional Link URL" box below the "Message" box; I don't remember if you must also put something in the Name of the Link box for it to work. Obviously this only lets you use one link per post.

Any links should work in Preview Message; if they don't work there, they won't work in the actual post. Same thing if you want the images to show up in the posts.

To post a photo, you can also (I think) simply add this before the photo's url:
(img src="

and this after the photo's url:
" /)

EXCEPT THAT: instead of the parentheses I used at the beginning and end, use the "less than" symbol (at the beginning) and the "greater than" symbol (at the end). You can find those two symbols above the comma and period. [If I use those symbols in the examples, the site thinks I'm trying to post a photo and nothing appears except a broken-image symbol, so I used the parentheses instead.]

It is necessary to skip the spaces as I did in the examples.
