Help, Gang! Should I kill bugs before planting?

I just came inside after pulling out all the tomatoes (biggest and best root systems I have EVER seen on tomatoes. Roots went out 4 feet from the plant, at least!) Also pulled up butternut squash and zucchini. They were mostly dead after being ravaged by bugs.

Y'all know I have battled squirrels in the tomatoes and bugs in the squash. My plan now is to plant some cilantro and some bright lights kale. Also moving asparagus (carefully -- I just planted it this spring, so it shouldn't be too hard to move.) THe asparagus can have a permanent home in the raised beds.

My question is this: The side of the beds that had the squash is now crawling with little yellow and black ladybug-like beetles AND stink bugs. Do I need to somehow kill those guys before planting anything there? I tried squashing a bunch of them, but there are so many!!!!!! SHould I sprinkle sevin on the soil a few times, then plant in a couple of weeks?

What do you guys think? Thank you!!!!!!!

Keep in mind that a) bugs can be really specific about what they eat so these bugs might not bother your new crops, and b) some bugs are beneficial and help you fight other bugs so killing beneficial bugs actually can make it worse.

That said, hopefully GGG will come along with some specific advice (I don't do veggies).

Thanks, Esh! I am getting to be an "I don't do veggies" person too. (But I'm sure, come January, my bad gardening year will be a distant memory, and I'll be ready to try again. Sigh.)

I'm planting cilantro and kale now, in the other bed. Took out those lovely 'maters. I'm sure the squirrels will be sad.

Thank you for responding, tsmith2579. Before I received your response, I went to my local garden center to inquire. They told me to spray the plant with diluted dish soap and spray it into the soil as well. They assured me it was completely safe to do so. Well, I did as they suggested and the bugs seemed to die as soon as the soapy water him them. I cleaned it up and put fresh soil in the pot and set it out for a sun bath. Breathing a sigh of relief, I really thought it was going to be all good... Well, I can tell you all that what I did is apparently NOT and I repeat NOT what you do. My plant is now dead as a hammer and I am just sick over it. I have since read that maybe it was putting it out in the hot sun that did it in. I am unsure what happened. Hopefully, my misfortune will help someone else to avoid this trauma. -Frank

That wee larva inside the spit is a Spittle Bug, the larva of a froghopper, as it is known, A sharp steam of water can knock the wee bugger off the plant, but just washing away the foam will not necessarily do that. Once the foam is gone you can usually see to wee larva. The other brown, soft, slimy thingys are a bit more difficult but most likely are slugs, or the larva of any one of a number of insects. If a sharp stream of water does not do a good enough job of control (often just knocking these wee buggers off the plant is enough), and Insecticidal Soap is no help perhaps moving up to Neem Oil products or eventually to a pyrethrin based pesticide may be necessary.

Hi Bernard, I hope I don't repeat something because I only got about halfway through this thread before I got sick of reading and decided to go ahead and post. #1. I don't know where the idea come from that calloused roots are good. Callouses can't absorb water. It's dry scar tissue that keeps in/out moisture, thereby protecting broken stems and so on. When a plant's roots are partially exposed by wildlife digging, etc., the exposed portion callouses to keep the plant from dehydrating, but that calloused portion will never absorb water again. We don't want roots to callous (except maybe Bonsai growers who like to expose some roots over a rock or something). Putting a root system into dry mix is never good for it. I challenge anyone to prove how dehydrating or callousing a root system can possibly be good for it. The previous poster who said the dry mix will dehydrate the plant is correct. Always use damp mix for re-potting a healthy root system. If the roots are dead, it might be a different story. #2. As you've already learned, it's easy to under-water gritty mix. Since it's pretty close to impossible to over-water grit, I'm with the posters who say to soak it deeply and often. If you're paranoid, soak it daily, or even twice daily, but then give the pot a quick, little down-up motion to dislodge any perched water. That way it'll always be just barely moist. If it were mine, and planted in grit, I'd just water every day or two until the roots are well-established. As one who has killed off whole, healthy root systems by under-watering grit (once weekly), I feel confident in telling you that you're extremely unlikely to drown a plant in grit. I'm watering my succulents daily right now, and some are STILL too dry. BTW, Danny, I think mentioned he prefers soil for jades. I don't disagree with him. The one I have in soil has grown much better than the ones I have in grit. Furthermore, the Aeonium I had in a 1:1 soil:pumice mix has a huge, beautiful, healthy root system. The big one in grit has puny roots. These aren't experiments with standardized variables, so something else might be going on, but for now, I'm also not certain that grit is always a better medium.

Get some mimosa flowers and put them next to it. That will repel most beetles. Without a picture, I'm just trying to guess what it is killing your tomato plants, but it sounds like some sort of beetle. Most of the bugs in the world are in the beetle family, so you can never go wrong by guessing beetle. :) DE is absolutely terrible to use on open-pollinated plants. I wish I could convince people to stop using it as their "go to" solution. Walking around bugs just get it on their feet so it doesn't hurt them much at all, but wallowing bugs (like pollinating bees) get it all over them and then they die. You're much better off if you can figure out non-chemical methods of protecting your plants. Sometimes it's a companion plant, and sometimes it's a change of gardening methods.

The beetles, which look like lady bugs are squash bugs. They like squash, sometimes cukes depending on the cuke leaf and that's pretty much it (tiny red ones like that are bean beetles). I've personally never had a stink bug bother my fall vegetables, but I never know. One year they thought yard long beans were all the rage. This year they land on every tomato in the main garden, but apparently dislike anything in the temporary garden? So go figure? I doubt they will like your leafy greens though. They tend to like squishy things with some "give" (such as almost but not totally ripe tomatoes) that they can stick a probiscus in and suck. Annoyingly.... grrmmmm

For your own piece of mind you can plant and put some Diamotaceous earth down, but I bet in a day or two your bugs will have vacated the premises for greener pastures (but don't send them here!!!)

What's this about cold winter frosts killing bugs. We had a cold winter, this is the worst bug year (ants, cockroaches, palmetto bugs, stink bugs....) ever.

I had a sadistic moment yesterday..... After pulling up the butternut and zucchini, the bed was crawling with displaced stinkbugs. There were tons of them, in various ages and stages of development. (Mom, Dad, the kids, Aunt Mabel, Uncle Joe.....) I had fun squashing a bunch of them, then went about some other gardening business. i planted my seeds, then watered. I had the hose in my hand and happened to look up at the trellis on the end of the raised bed.
There, balanced on the upper edge, were about 30 stink bugs! I smiled, turned the hose sprayer from gentle shower to super-sonic jet -- and blasted them all to kingdom come.

GGG -- yes, so MANY bugs! I did notice some cardinals and wrens in the veggies, getting the bugs, but they didn't eat enough!
