Woo Hoo, raindrops on my blooms today... (pix)

We finally got some more rain late yesterday and it's been raining more this morning. First we've had since the 1st weekend in June. I know that's not nearly as bad as some folks have had it, but hey, when you're in a severe drought for 2 years, you begin to worry when there's no rain for a few weeks! :)

Anyway....I made a few photos between showers this morning. Hope you enjoy them.

Wasn't that rain fabulous!

All are beauties! I did not know Malaysian Marketplace re-bloomed. That is great! I love them all, but the Willy Lyles is new, and I like it.

We've just had sprinkles today, but got >1 2/2 inches last night. I had to work the 2nd 3rd and 4th "P" shifts (&P-&A) and so we planned a late 4th celebration with my son and his family.

The rain came, the power went!!! DH hooked up a generator, and we had our gathering after all. We had little damage, so all is well.

I have a few nice reblooms and a few continuing, but not like yours. then I am a late-comer. thanks for posting all the lovelies and I will post a few later, but mine won't be so impressive.

Greetings all, Here's a picture of the brugs I bought yesterday at $15 each. It's raining extremely hard right now. I ran out and brought them into my laundry room so the wind wouldn't knock off the blooms. The shredded white 'Confettii' has over 10 buds so when it flowers I will post a picture; the double white has about six buds besides the four blooms. Edna, when my 'Confettii' brug gets larger, you can certainly have cuttings -- just remind me. I hadn't been to WWE in over a year and was glad I went. It's only 10 miles from my home so I was there in less than 15 minutes on the freeway. Gloria, WorldWide Exotics Inc., 11157 Orcas Ave., Lakeview Terrace, 818/890-1915. Sara is the person I've bought from before, and her mom and dad do the farmer's markets in Santa Clarita, Burbank and I think she said also Pasadena. Call for the times they are opened. Last time, I bought salvias Indigo Spires and Purple Majesty, kangaroo paws, pelargonium sidoides, and colocasia Black Mask. This time, the two brugs, senecio petasitis, Leonotis sp., oxalis purpurea 'Garnet', and colocasia Black Mask (again, forgot I already had it). I wanted some other plants, but then I remembered a had a rental car and it is small compared to my Jeep! The rain stopped for a bit, have to run out to tip one of my plumeria pots that has a water reservoir and don't want root rot. Later.

I'm picky about the varieties I plant, so I've only planted two so far, Caspian Pink and Koralik, about ten days ago. I resisted buying any seedlings during the warm spell in February, and waited until we had a week of sun in March. Both are in walls-o-water. I'll probably plant a dozen more (including the ones I'm growing from seed). Bahia wondered why do it...To push the limits of what can be grown when, of course. And also because, having grown my own tomatoes and raspberries and cucumbers and strawberries, I can't eat store-bought versions any more (and rarely eat the farmers' market versions). The difference in quality is so astounding that I don't eat these unless I've grown them. Last year, I planted 2 plants in mid-February and a bunch more in March, despite the rain and cold. The year before, I planted a bunch in late March, even though it was an especially cold and rainy year. Both years, I used walls-o-water or bubble wrap, plus sheets of plastic to protect from rainstorms and morning frost, and I was out there in the wind and rain securing and replacing the protective covers. But I can eat homegrown tomatoes in June! IIRC, last year I got a couple by the end of May. This year I've also planted some tomato seeds outdoors using the "wintersowing" technique pioneered (or publicized) by some east-coast gardeners: Poke air and drainage holes in some some small plastic containers, fill with soil, plant seeds, and transplant (with protection) even before the plants develop true leaves. I just had to try this to see if it really works. A few of my seedlings are reaching the top of the containers so should be ready to plant out, though they're only a couple inches high. Last year I waited until the soil was warm to plant beans, and I could have planted a lot earlier. I saw some beans producing very well at the beginning of July at the community garden. So this year, I'm going to plant beans by April 1. Or maybe earlier -- I saw another garden plot that just put in some transplants last week.

Woo Hoo! Heat Index Lower Than Temperature

The lower heat index only lasted maybe 3 hours but it was nice while it lasted. Both yesterday morning and this morning were cooler than other recent mornings--69 yesterday morning and 67 this morning. It 'should' feel pretty good out there right now, except the humidity at the moment is 95%, so it doesn't. We supposedly have a 40% chance of afternoon thundershowers here, but I doubt it will happen. I'll believe it only when raindrops are falling on my head. With a chance of rain like that in the forecast, it is unlikely we'll have really low humidity this afternoon, darn it!

My very first rooted-rose bloom! Woo-hoo!!

Thank you! Yes, I pretty much am addicted! I spent the summer obsessing about roses and it has not been any different this winter. One of my fathers rose cuttings is the one currently blooming. I took pictures today. I have a couple that only have two leaves, but they seem to have great roots going. I got them from the head gardener/landscaper for one of the bigger property owners in town here. He takes care of multiple business properties and rentals and happened to be pruning some roses at a local tea house at the time. He offered me the cuttings. I don't know what rose it is so I just tagged it "tea house climber". They seem okay, despite the lack of top growth. They had pretty good root systems when I removed them from their baggies and potted them up into their individual greenhouses. I'm hoping for the best. The ones I am most thrilled about are a couple from the local library. It is a single petaled pink with a white eye and it is so sweet. They are always in bloom all season and are vigorous and healthy. I took many pictures this summer intending on posting them to see if anyone could identify it but haven't yet. They look somewhat like Ballerina, if I recall the name correctly. I don't think it is carefree beauty because I think the bushes have been there far too long to be that. Either way it is a sweetie and now I have two of them, too! Again, JOY!! And, yes, soon I will have roses for all!!

Lovely blooms, Jan! 'Malaysian Marketplace' is gorgeous, and every time I see 'Unique Purple,' I wonder why I don't have it yet.

BTW, one of my "rescues" from my old house is my clump of 'Fairy Tale Pink' I got from you a couple years ago - it's a favorite, and I just couldn't leave it behind. It may be one of the ones putting up scapes for me (I hope so!).

Jan, all of them are gorgeous. Your bloom season looks like it was especially nice this year. Of course, I love Malaysian Marketplace and that picture of Willie Lyles is a show stopper. But they all look wonderful.

Very nice blooms! The number of stunning reblooms you have is amazing! I am happy for the rain for you as well. It is always such a wonderful feeling to wake up to raindrops after a long dry spell. You can almost see the plants smiling.

I don't know why I don't have MALAYSIAN MARKETPLACE yet, as I drooled over the photos all last season, and it jumped right out at me again here. Will have to fix that! I also think SHERRY CANDY is absolutely wonderful!

I'll have to check what our daylily club is selling this year. Just maybe someone is donating a MM for the sale.

Great pics as always Jan. I can't say I want to see a raindrop for the next 5 days. Too much over the past several weeks and I was itching to get outside and get back into gardening and our other projects.

Jan, the rain is truly welcome. It isn't so much the lack of rain as it is the heat w/ the combination of no rain. We got about 1 3/4" but it may be to late for my late bloomers. The blooms are very small and I'm having a lot of bud drop. Your pix as always are beautiful and you probably have more blooms than I. Some of your newbies are strutting aren't they? My sis is home now..thanks for your prayers...Ellie

I'm happy for you and your much needed rain, Jan.
We received way too much rain in our long, drawn-out cold Spring, that the conditions slowed my bloom season drastically!

I'm sure enjoying all the blooms from south of us, while waiting for mine to put on a show...only a few blooming here right now.

Willie Lyles is one of my favorites. I have a couple young plants, and am eager to see a clump of blooms!

Malaysian Marketplace was on my wish list last year, but I wasn't able to purchase it, soooooo, back on the list it goes...must have it...someday.

Great photography, and thanks for sharing.

Thanks everybody...I'm glad ya'll can enjoy my rebloom and my lates with me.
It's still raining here Kay....haven't checked the gauge tonight, but boy am I happy to be getting it. I won't have to pull out the hoses and sprinklers for a while now. :)
Ya'll keep posting your beauties too, cause mine will be gone shortly and I'll need my daily daylily fix you know!! LOL

Golly Jan.The rain went that a way. I didn't get nothing here but a few sprinkles.barely wet the bottom of my rain gauge.I was hoping for a lot of rain,since they predicted 4 days of storms.BUT, at least I had 1 day of cloudy weather to help with this heat. Ilove your blooms.They are all just beautiful.The best one to me is BILL VOJIR. That one is gorgeous.

What a great pic of Malaysian Marketplace. Mine still doesn't have scapes, so I'm not sure I'll get to see blooms this year.

Jan, they are all so gorgeous! I esp like that Malasian Marketplace....its a true eye catcher! Also like that Unique Purple too. Well I like them all. It must be overwhelming to tour your gardens!!! I really like the liriopi next to Willie Lyles...what a picture. They compliment each other. Thanks for sharing! We have rain now too....must be some of the same front passing thru the South. We need it but I hate it.
