can I move a daylily now--(getting damaged)

Hi everyone,

I have Lake Effect growing at the edge of a communal area in a shered yard outside my garden. A few days ago it looked great with 3 strong scapes with about 10 buds on each one and I was looking forward to seeing a good number of flowers on it for the first time------until the workmen arrived!

The first day they came and drove over the edge of the bed before parking ON it (idiots!!), knocking off one scape altogether. The following day a different workman arrived and did exactly the same thing, even though the area is clearly not a parking area.

I now have one scape with just 6 small flower buds as the bigger ones were knocked off this scape as well.

Could I move the whole plant into my garden now to prevent further damage or would it just die from shock at this stage?

If you dig it and keep most of the soil on the rootball, it should be OK. It might experience some bud loss, but probably not too bad.

In my experience with dividing and moving daylilies, when they still have active scapes on them(which I only do when I'm designing a new bed and want to put some of the daylilies I already have in it). The plant itself may suffer some transplant shock, as far as the bloom scapes, I've noticed that for the most part, the buds will still open, but typically arent as robust as an undisturbed clump, which I would expect since the plant is now diverting its energies to re-establishing its root system and the still un-opened buds.

If my choices were possibly losing the plant from being driven over and parked on or moving the plant but not having great blooms this year but still having the plant, I'd suggest moving it.

Nope, we don't get much "fall" here, lol, but Oct - Dec is usually really nice weather... the horrible heat finally breaks and we have a chance to prep for "winter", ie, Jan & Feb! ;-) Thanks for the advice... I was thinking it wouldn't be a good idea to move it but was worried about the size of the pot. I did post the ? over on the Roses forum but haven't heard back from anyone yet... I'm sure I will shortly. I have no experience with roses at all - this little Knock Out was an impulse buy - and it amazed me how quickly it went from dormant to active when the weather warmed up last month... just a few days! I'd planned to move it into a much larger container during the "cold" (for SC, anyway!) weather but never got around to it... so much to do, so little time!

Yup, I agree. The earlier the better. Cool weather promotes good root growth and that's what you want after a move. So many people think you have to wait until its 80 outside to do this stuff. Couldn't be farther from the truth. Kevin

Can I divide daylilies now?

You can move and divide them at any time. I had a very overgrown flower bed that I needed to renovate. I dug up everything and replanted. Some of the daylilies bloomed in the temporary pots (with just a little soil thrown over them) before I even got them into their new location. I have even heard the recommendation to move and divide them while blooming to be sure you know what colors are going where you want them. I didn't wait for mine to bloom before moving them but as I said, some bloomed anyway, so I was able to place the colors exactly where they look best. Were they set back? Yes, the stems were shorter than usual on some.

You already know it can't stay in this spot. The options are move it or kill it. I would try to move it and see what happens. If it turns out too difficult or doesn't make it, you can get another this summer. Yours should leaf out if it lives sooner than all the garden centers will start carrying these in bloom.

Just be sure to water it diligently and it should be fine if you get a good amount of dirt with it.
