I was at Grower's Outlet a couple of weeks ago. THey had great petunias for 50cents each. They had black eyed susans for a dollar each... lots of good prices... So check them out.

Depends on what you like. I would go with a basic pot and attention-getting colorful plants for a home sale.

Garden Ridge has a good selection of pots at reasonable prices. Hobby Lobby had a nice selection, not sure if they still do, and their garden stuff is half off right now.

Depending on what you consider reasonable pricing, Pike's has more upscale wrought iron and metal pots and containers. VERY nice looking, might be worth it to you as a cost of selling your home.

If you don't mind driving, The Pottery in Commerce has a huge selection at great prices.

We have a fabulous nursery where I live but The Pottery has the same pots for almost half the price. It's worth the trip.
However, since this for selling only, I wouldn't get anything expensive unless you know you'll use them at your next house.

Garden Ridge has their pots on sale for 30% off.

We found some great deals on Italian Terra Cotta compagna pots at the Old Time Pottery in Douglasville...$14.00 for some pretty big pots (around eighteen inches tall and say fourteen inches across, too hot to go out and measure them now). The same pots at the Home Depot are $45.00!

Thanks to all of you for sharing your knowledge and experiences. Nippersdad, I'm not familiar with those you mentioned are they a heavy terra cotta?

Nippersdad, you mentioned Douglasville. If you hear of any plant lovers in that area looking for a house ours has a 1+ acre lot with a creek, Asian Mayapples, lots of ferns and other plants---including a large kiwi arbor.

I'm sorry not to have gotten back to you. Yes, they are a heavy terra cotta type of pot, so they will need to be elevated off the ground, particularly in winter lest they start to spall.

There is always the chance of breakage in the winter freezes, but I have yet to have one break. I planted mine in boxwoods and underplant the box with annuals in season. I don't water much in the coldest months and they have developed a great patina.

I will certainly tell anyone I meet about your house, but I am sorry to say that I don't know anyone in the market right now. I am really jealous of your creek! Good luck!

Nippersdad, thanks for the tips. I didn't find any pots like you described, but I did find some I like. What do you use to elevate yours off the ground?

Damn! I was going over there later today to get some more too! They really were too good a deal to last long. Thanks for the heads up; saved me some gas.

I have been using bricks for those which sit in mulched beds (can't see the bricks), and clay pot feet for those which stand on the patio and on the brick walk. The pot feet are cheap and elegant, but very hard to find.

They also have the advantage of preventing any (pot shaped)stains on whatever surface you put your pots on and/or prevent the (?) from rooting into the soil underneath the pot. Well worth the trouble and they last forever.

The last batch that I got, I ordered from the Star Nursery in CA. Their number is: 1-866-584-7827 ext. 41. Ask for David. The SKU # is 853349 for one inch mini pot feet. They are $2.49 per set of three plus shipping (easier to just get a bunch at once).

Or, you could probably also use some upended, cheap, clay pot saucers (50 cents at the Home Depot) to achieve the same thing. I know this is probably more than you wanted to know, but I had the receipt right in front of me and couldn't resist. Have a great weekend!

Nippersdad, I wonder if Old Time Pottery ever gets in additional quantities of things like flower pots when they sell out of a certain type? I looked in the area of the store where they had lots of flower pots grouped together. Some where stacked on pallets, etc. I also saw a few other types scattered through the store on shelves.

I don't know that they do...I have been going there since they opened and they seem to buy only overstocks or something. When they sell out...they are gone.

If you are talking about the Italian compagna type pots; I had to go to Douglasville on Sat. for dogfood and dropped by. They still had some of the ones I told you about (bought two more) in the middle of that pallet area you are talking about. They had about four more of the larger ones and lots of the small ones.

Nippersdad, I'm glad you found them. I plan to look again and see if I can find them. Do they have any design on the sides?

Not really a design per se. They are made of a reddish clay and have thick, rounded rims with a rib underneath and a rib around the midsection. Kind of typical, but classic nonetheless. They look just like the ones you see in pictures of Tuscany with orange trees in them.

You see them made of plastic everywhere, but the plastic ones never grow any moss or develop a patina; just kind of start to look a sickly whitish orange. I would much rather risk freeze damage than have something like that in my garden. Especially when you can get the real thing for less than the fake!
