Volunteer pumpkin - what do I do?

A month ago I prepared my 15 gallon containers for this tear's tomatoes and chilis. In one of my pots, a pumpkin sprouted - probably from a seed from last year's jack o'lantern that went into the compost. It's now growing very happily in a tomato cage.

I think it would be fun to see if I can get one or two pumpkins - even though there is not much space. When the vine gets to the top of the cage do I just pinch the tip or is it better to cut the vine between leaves? How do you hand pollinate the flowers?

Realistically I should just pull it out since there is no room, but on the other hand, it won't cost anyhing to bonsai it to see what happens.

Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks, Holly

Holly, I wouldn't prune that vine much. They need the leafs to produce and mature fruit.

Can you let it climb the cage and then crawl around the others? Pumpkins, depending on the variety, need room. If it is something like Baby Bear (very restrained variety) it might do well. But normal Jack O'lantern varieties generally get large. Wish I could tell you what to do.

The pollinating link is fabulous. I just don't have the heart to pull it out and put it in the compost bin, so I may try letting the vine do 'laps' around my containers.

It's an interesting experiment and we'll see what happens.

Its going to be way to late in the year for young tomato plants to do anything for you. Save the room for winter crops. As for the transition to winter. It helps if you have alot of room. Then you have space to start your next seasons crops. Or you can try planting in between other things that are almost done. For instance planting tomatoes in spring in between brocoli plants. Or lettuce in fall in between peppers.

Premature pumpkin harvest here. Heard a large crack in the back yard yesterday, and went outside to find my largest Big Max lying on the patio with a big gouge out of it. Either it got too heavy for the stem to support or the squirrels were playing with it. Anyway, it broke off and rolled down a slight slope and over the retaining wall fence. Decided it was nature's way of telling me to harvest and get the vine into the compost pile. The big pumpkin weighs 43.5 pounds and has a 54 " circumference. The smaller one is only 13.3 pounds with a 31" circumference. Loved growing these this year and will probably grow them again next year. 3 New England Pie pumpkin plants have produced 5 good sized pumpkins and I have 6 more that should be ready in a few weeks!

ya samw question I just asked on fri or sat...well I have er about 50-60% chance of getting them out and growing..but I go around to local places myself and get the volunteer JM's that would be turned into mulch if I just left them, and I can't let them do that to such a beautiful tree..anyways, i usually stick a spade down half or more of the length of the spade 2+in from the stem and then push down at an angle to loosen the dirt and pull the plant out...this is stressful to the plant thats why my survival rate is low, but i leave the ground as it was... now since these are in your yard I would take a spade and dig them out like a normal transplant..so 3-4in from the stem make a circle with your spade by inserting it all the way in the ground or at least 6+inches in the soil..then on one or two sides dig so you can stick your spade underneith the 6" rootball and lift..if you feel it staying stuck because of the plants roots dig deeper or cut it as far down as you can, you don't want to yank it out of the ground as this is stressful to the plant..with this method you will have a close to 90% or better rate of survival..the roots of a first year volunteer are usually only 4-5" in diameter and only 4" or so deep..so with a 12" diameter rootball you shoukd be fine and have no issues..good luck to you!

We've done so many different things over the years. Having just moved to a different area, and DH only retiring less than a month ago, we haven't gotten involved in much at the new house yet. But some of the things we've done in the past: volunteered at the elementary school, raised puppies for the Seeing Eye, visited/took treats to nursing homes, got Christmas gifts and stockings for all the babies at the local AIDs Hospice, adopted pets whose owners had died, 4-H. We've often heard of families who have hit hard times--we put together a box (including some food and gc to places like grocery stores and Target) and drop it off annonymously. Other ideas: make dinners for the local Ronald McDonald House, volunteer in the court system (I'm anxious to give that one a try), walk dogs at the local shelter, volunteer at the hospital (especially VA), do crafts with the residents at your local assisted living, help out at the library,--there are so many different places where your time and energy--no matter how much you have to spare--will be much appreciated.

Pumpkin vines tend to root into the soil at every node if they can, and yours will need to if it is to produce. A pumpkin takes a lot of energy to produce. It could be fun to try growing a pumpking vine "piggy back" across containers. :) If there are bees out there the pollination will likely get done anyway. Male flowers usually come first (but not always). You need both to get a fruit, the female will develop into a pumpkin. Be sure you provide some support for the growing pumpking if it sets; the vine won't be able to support it on its own (unless it's a really tiny pumpkin!)

Update: I have a pumpkin! I hand pollinated a few flowers according to the instructions posted (thank you, thank you) and one started growing right away. Unfortunately I broke the main vine before I went on vacation so I wasn't able to get the vine back to the ground to do laps :) I made a hammock out of fabric to support it - tied between two tomato cages.

Now the vine looks terrible, probably because it's been in the 90's and it gets full afternoon sun on the black nursery pot, but the pumkin looks about ready to pick. Almost all the way orange and about as big around as a salad plate. Not much of a crop, but I'm happy with it.

Should I let the vine die or just cut it off now?

I had to laugh. The title sounded like it was an emergency or something!

...hello?...911? I have an emergency. There's this pumpkin...I don't know where it came from, it just showed up. Now it's growing towards the house! And the children! Help!
