Hello Everyone!

Just saying HI! to this forum and introducing myself. Been on GW for a long time & recently saw this newer forum. I really love the discussions about going green & it's time for me to start being active here.

I'm really excited about this green movement. I am not an environmentalist (however I am an Environmental Consultant for hazardous materials...not eco-stuff though...I fill up landfills with bad stuff in my profession).

Anyway, I was raised to be pretty green, not for the sake of saving the earth, but more on the lines of conserving utilities and money in general. I grew up in the country in a pretty simple, low-key farming community. Not much big industry or money to throw around, so the simple life was the norm. Most everyone grew their own gardens, hung out laundry, etc.

It's amazing how the daily habits of not wasting are trendy right now, and the wasteful people who used to make fun of me for hanging out my clothesline are now eager to pick up tips on how to cut back on waste.

I could ramble on, but I won't. I'm looking forward to sharing with everyone!

Hello Gayle,

I really do love the idea's this forum presents.

I too was raised to be practical, and am finding in this day and age a need to get back to basics.

I'm an at home mom of 3 and live on 1 and 1/2 acres in a ranch home. We garden, beekeep, and raise a few chickens. This year we are trying to mow less, and compost more. We are trying also to go more organtic with our honeybees.

Hi Gayle! I've seen you around the forums - glad you found this one!

This is a great place to share ideas and get info. I only wish it were a bit more active, but maybe that will come as more people discover it.

Jackie, lucky you, raising chickens and keeping bees! I've considered both, but so far my fear of bees and my procrastination have kept me from doing either. I'm hoping when my oldest starts college this fall it will give me some free time to put some of my plans into action!

Our first apartment when we moved in I got bit up terribly. Turns out the previous renter had a cat or dog and left fleas behind. And because I am so allergic to many things the fleas had a field day! We had to move out for a few days and the apartment manager had a flea bomb set off in there. I worry about the situation for those living and gardening in Europe, with winter coming on and an iffy fuel situation for heating. Fingers crossed for a mild winter this year! bart, I'm so glad to see you posting as I remember that you had some health challenges when I was last here. I wish you all the best in every way. I know your rose garden is very challenging, and I hope you remember to take care of yourself first and foremost. I've learned that gardens can be very ephemeral, but one can always try again when things don't work out. Sheila, I'm so sorry that your irrigation system was giving you fits. Bees are actually quite an investment of time and money. I strongly suggest much research before getting started.

My husband is the beekeeper, I'm just the generally interested helper, but I'm also a gardener so the bees are quite welcome to me.
