bad or possible to force turmeric/ginger into/out of dormancy?

It is well into fall here, but this is the first time this year the local stores have had fresh turmeric. I had wanted to try and grow some, but if it is dormant, will trying to break it out of dormancy be bad for it? Or if it is not dormant, will it be bad for it to begin growing as winter approaches?

The turmeric will, of course, have to be grown inside the house.

The ginger question is related; the ginger has been growing outside since about August. It was brought into the house when the night temperatures started to go into the 50F and lower range. When it starts to go dormant, will its leaves die back, or will it just quit growing and remain greenly leafy? Should I actively try to force it into dormancy?

Thank you for any suggestions.
