Wild Ginger

I recently purchased several Canadian wild ginger plants at my local nursery and was told that they would stay evergreen in the Chicago area. I have read some descriptions that say that they loose their leaves in the winter. I was looking for a evergreen groundcover and wonder if I can plant the European varity in the Chicago area. Does anyone know if it's hardy enough for our brutal winters?

Almost all people are familiar with this common herb which is usually used as a spice in kitchen. Ginger has been used as culinary properties for centuries. More importantly, ginger also can be used as herb medicine to treat ailments in daily life. I think it can plant the European varity in the Chicago area.

I'm just starting to grow Wild Ginger but it's not an evergreen in 5b. It's a nice groundcover that I started from bare-root 2 years ago. It's slowly spreading & provides nice coverage in deep shade, where I don't have too many options. I haven't yet tried any of the medicinal/culinary uses for this, but obviously it's not ginger as traditionally known in our kitchens.

Would not recommend any kind of Ginger under live oak trees. For a ground cover that might do that needs excellent drainage as does the oak try Salvia spathacea. It can be a natural companion to native stands of live oaks. Here is a link that might be useful: Salvia spathacea

I doubt ginger will "take over" the Garlic mustard. I'm not sure there is a native plant that can compete with it. You will need to control it, or it will continue to multiply aggressively.
