County Compost Close to Paulding County?

We recently moved to south Paulding county. Our soil needs major improvement. What county locations have free compost that would be close to us? Does Paulding? How about Cobb? My husband has tried to phone the Cobb location numerous times and no one answers. Thanks so much!

Cobb does or did have a Compost Plant, privately run, on County Farm Rd near the waste pick-up station. I do not know if it is still in operation, but it was not free. There was a small charge for it. There was a lot of controversy about the smell when it first opened a few years ago. They closed it, resolved that problem, but I do not know if it continues to be open. I think it does, because the County also collects yard debris at a site close by, mulches it or carries it to the Compost plant. You can probably get info on the Compost plant from the County Waste Station.

Cobb County's compost facility is indeed open and is FREE. I go regularly, the last time was just about three weeks ago. It is at 2500 Pitner Rd, just off of County Line Road, north of Due West Road. The only problem is that I don't know if it is free to the world or just to Cobb Co. residents. There is a sign, once you're inside the grounds that explains how they work and I am sure I read it a long time ago, but don't remember any details. They are only open on Wednesday, Thursday, and Saturday, from 9:00 to maybe 3:00. Take your own shovels, manure spreader, and a jug of water and load your vehicle, containers, whatever. Knowing that the tree will be in close range to the garage , 6-10 feet, then I would think that a small growing tree would be more site appropriate. These trees may be a good source to check out: Acacia vestita - gracefuly weeping silvery cut leaf in form with soft yellow late winter flowers grows to about 16 ft tall and about the same in width. Cercis canadensis Forest Pansy - nice burgundy heart shaped leaves that flutter in the wind. the tree grows to about 20 ft. tall and about 16 wide. Deep pink flowers in late winter /early spring . Fruitless Olive - Swanhill - can get to 25 x 20 but easily can be kept smaller with once a year pruning. Arbutus unedo or the larger growing A. marina ( maybe too large for your location - Madrone Callistomon Cane's Hybrid. - gorgeous soft pinkish flowers cascading down from a 15 tall x15 wide tree. I have this growing in my Marin county yard and always receive nice feedback out its shape, form , foliage and flowering. A trip to Flora Grubb Garden Nursery in SF will further help you to find some great trees or The Dry Garden on the Berkelely/Oakland line.

Thanks for the advice Tom, next time I am in Tampa I will stop by Treemart. I have kind of come to the conclusion over the past couple of years that there are no deals at Dolins which is why my instincts told me to walk away and check back here first. I looked at the Jungle Growth Professional Flower & Veggie mix at Lowes later that day and it I think it said was a mix of peat and bark. I opted for the "Fast Draining Soil" from Home Depot which looked like a similar product but the bags weren't saturated like the Jungle Mix was and seemed to maybe have a higher bark ratio. I don't know if the fine were composted, but it did contain dolomite. Would this raise (and therefore balance)the pH?. The bag was no bargain but better than Dolins. I have never actually used fines before and needed some to quickly work into some already planted containers to lighten up the badly compacting and water collecting potting soil/peat/perlite. I mix I already had in them. Treemart sounds like a great price and I can't wait to get some for future planting.

I have been there a few times but not for a couple of years. I was driving by there a couple of days ago and just stopped in to see how much compost they had. Huge black mound that looks good and aged. I thought that was Gwinnett and I live in Gwinnett so I guess I shouldn't of been going there but nobody ever asks or even talks to you. Its very easy to load from where the pile is. There is also one, I think its still there, thats Dekalb also behind the jail on Memorial Dr. Closed Sunday and I think they might close half day on Sat bobby

Manure in Greene County?

Have you tried people who have horses? Here in Dutchess County, they're are several people who are happy for us to take some of their manure. Before they closed our median, my husband used to drive his Kubota with the front loader across the Taconic to the horse farm on the other side of the parkway, load up and drive back. If there's no aged manure available, you could take new manure but you'll have to age it before you can use it on your garden. Having new manure works only if you have a big enough yard that you can store it away from your house (and your neighbors' houses).

The Cobb County Compost facility is located 2150 County Services Parkway, which runs off Austell Road (in Marietta, near Jim Miller Park). Compost and mulch are available free to residents (officially residents of Cobb County, but they've never asked me for ID). It's really a high quality finished product, and you can get more information at the Cobb County website. About as "high tech" as compost can be, I guess!

About 2 months ago there was a sign at the pitner site saying it would be closed as of October 2006, but the pile was still there and the gate was open. Was that sign taken down?

Uh - just one correction that I hope will help: the link in Woody's post above takes one to a page on the Cobb County Website that has an INCORRECT ADDRESS! See the HOME page on that site for updated information:

(Effective OCT 02,2006 the facility has moved from the Pitner road location to the Cobb County Vegetative Waste Recycling site at 2150 County Services Parkway between Austell Road and Powder Springs Road. The hours of operation at the Vegetative Waste site will be 8:00 - 5:00 Mondays through Fridays, and 9:00 to 4:00 on Saturdays. Commercial compost operations will continue Mondays through Thursdays at the Pitner Road site until further notice.
