Wanted: Crystal Ice Strep

Does anyone have one that would be willing to share a leaf or know where I can get this? Both Rob and Lyndon's do not carry it though it is on Lyndon's website. I just fell in love with the white with blue/purple stripes in the center. If you know of any other small, very fragrant streps, please chime in. Fragrant, compact streps are hard to find!

If noone chimes in...you could email Lyndon Lyon and ask if they would sell a leaf (lol)...never hurts to ask, or when they expect to offer it.

I did. Paul said they no longer carry this plant. I am so frustrated. It has been months now. Someone in the US must have this plant.

Well, I have a lot of leaves down, but only a couple rooted. I have trouble with the strep leaves, cutting them and putting them down. I've mostly been successful with putting the cut stem end in the soil (like a violet leaf)and getting one or two plants. A friend can put a cut leaf section down and get dozens of babies from it, but not me, not yet anyway. Maybe by august I'll have something rooted. I also have a lot of young violet plants and rooted leaves and a baby blue moon chirita and a lot of different chirita I could give (or start) leaves of..a couple rooted cuttings of koleria and a few episcia as well. I will not be able to trade now until mid Aug as I have several mini trips planned and I won't be able to receive a package of plants until then. Thanks for replying...it's slow here. tish

Be patient. They will come to us. I am sure of that, since all the older Dibley's creations have made it into circulation here and in Canada. Someone will bring back a leaf and someone will propagate it and before you know it, our mail order specialists like Lyndon Lyon will offer it. By the way, I like the plants I have gotten from Lyon's though they are ones I bought at convention plant sales where they brought plants rather than mail order. But they are the same plants they ship. They grow amazingly robust and beautiful starter plants. Lyndon Lyon was a great hybridizer of AV's and gesneriads. He started the nursery in the late 40's I think. Today it is owned and operated by his grandson, Paul Sorano, who learned the business and learned the love of plants from his grandfather. He was the grandchild who hung out at the greenhouse from an early age. So, I am a big fan. Jon PS. Though the newer hybrids being created by Dibley's and other hybridizers, many of whom are also in the UK are outstanding, I still believe that one can get just about as nice plants by growing on seed, if that seed comes from some of the better hybrids. One seed pod from a single cross can produce an amazing assortment of outstanding flowers. A good source for a wide variety of strep seeds is the AGGS seed fund.

Glass?? Collect?? bwahahaha!! That stuff is worse than the pink transferware!! couple of things...Fostoria crystal hasn't been reproduced that I have heard....and the number of mold lines only tell you how many pieces there were in the mold to make that particular piece. You should be able to find Imperial-Ohio Cape Cod fairly cheaply at thrift shops and auctions and household sales...if you want to complete the set, don't but something different....unless you are like me and want a bit of everything! Yep...old berry bowls, nappies, pickle dishes etc etc...I have shelves and cupboards full! Linda C

Tempted to troll on the AV forums, with my streps

Sue, streps like the same temps as AV's but unlike AV's they will grow and flower in cooler temps. They will not sulk when the temps go into the low 60's like AV's. However, temps at or above 85 degrees for a period of time will cause death in short time. Light can be the same or slightly higher but no direct sun like AV's. AV soil is fine to use with streps. However, streps unlike AV's do not tolerate wet roots. I would add perlite to your mix when repotting. You are correct with your watering to water when they feel dry. Better to err on the dry side than too wet. If the plant wilts from being too dry it will recover after watering. A trick I use is to mist the leaves both top and underneath when this happens as well as watering throughly. It helps the plant recover faster. You will find streps like to be fed constantly but weakly. 1/4 strength would be good. Be sure to flush pots once a month with clear water to avoid salt build-up. Streps should be repotted every 6 months at minimum and often earlier. They usually will outgrow their pots in 3-4 months. Do not over pot! Easiest way to kill the plant as roots could be wet for too long a time. Pot only one size up at a time. Humidity is the same. I find if they are in higher humidity with proper air circulation it will not be a problem. The downside with too much humidity with them is rot of younger growth and powdery mildew. This is the same problem I have witnessed with AV's in the past. One last important tip, do not use blossom fertilizer (ex. 10-50-10) on streps! Unlike AV's, phosphorous in large amounts over time will kill your plant. Use a balanced fertilizer (ex. 7-7-7 or 20-20-20) or something with with slightly higher nitrogen and potash and a lower phosphorous number. ( ex. 7-6-8) I hope this answers your questions. Great suggestion, db. I have done so. Hopefully I will hear back from them with something positive. You know, as a gardening addict inside and out, it is so frustrating that the US has nothing compared to UK availability. For example, wallflowers and parma violets are so hard to get here. We need a gardening show that is really well done in the US modeled after Gardener's World. Maybe that would boost growers and us gardeners would have more of a selection. What do you think?

Well, I would have to say that for my climate, wallflowers and parma violets are poor choices.

But I do know the apparent issues of availability of European cultivars in the US. I just (July) bought some Ukrainian streptocarpus cvs from an Ebay seller, because there is no (or not yet) American nurseryman who has them propagated for sale.

I've heard the same in many other genus, like Hellebores, and bulbous plants.

I know the red tape is to prevent diseases and insects from entering from abroad...but it's not (imo) the small importer that's likely to import a pest. It's big business and we get everything there anyway (how many insects and pests have been successfully imported....lol?).

Recently, I attended a plant related symposium, where a speaker said perhaps the term native has lost it's meaning and we just say we have a global ecosystem. I'm not quite ready for that..maybe..but I do see his point.

Wallflowers and Parma violets were just an example. I could write you a list. LOL! I don't think anyone on this forum is growing fragrant streps. I have started several threads about this and while a few were kind enough to respond, it seems fragrance is of little interest. I can't understand it.

I kinda sorta thought Judyj might have at least one fragrant strep...she'll check in later today.
Myself, I have allergies, and fragrances aren't usually that welcome in an enclosed space.

DB I have allergies, too. I have an asthma attack if I am within 10 feet of chemical "fragrances" like yankee candles or purchased potpourri. I figured out that it was chemical fragrances I was actually allergic to. But flowers and pure essential oils are fine. Just an idea...

Judy,m Just checked Gary's site. He has three fragrant streps. One is too large for me. I bought two Smelly Cat and Sixth Scents. Thanks!!!

Too bad there is no indication of mature plant size on Gary's site. (At least none I could find.) Does have quite the huge Strep selection.

Sometimes they give a few hints, like "Large Flowering" etc. I always hope that means they'll be large!

Terri, I ordered Cynamon, King of Kings, Smelly Cat and one non-scented one (cuz it's gorgeous!)-Wendy's Niagara Falls. Also noted no substitutes please, just call me and we'll work it out.

I'm still bidding on two on Ebay, but someone's playing bidding wars so I may not get them.

Judy, Cynamon does not say it is fragrant. Did you see other information on this? I just added Bristol's Psychedelic Sun! Wow, fragrant streps are hard to find!

You're correct-Guess Cynamon is one of the others I thought was beautiful! No it's not listed as fragrant. My frame of mind was in two places!

However, from Ebay I've gotten Beloved also, and it is supposed to be fragrant. We''ll see how it goes. Haven't heard from Gary at all as to when he's shipping.
