I Want To Grow Ginger, My First Time

Ok, so when I say that this is my "first time" growing ginger, I actually mean this may be just about my first time growing much of anything. I have lots of plants that I bought pre-grown and managed to keep alive, but I've never taken the initiative to grow anything on my own just because I really, really wanted to make it grow. Until now. I saw some pictures of ornamental ginger today and I think these plants look just beautiful. I wanted to grow Curcumas maybe.

I have a house and a lawn and can grow these indoors or outdoors. I live near Los Angeles. So my questions are:

1) should I try growing indoors or outdoors?

2) is it too late in the year to plant seeds? I would need to buy them somewhere and get them planted so it could be a few more weeks before I get this underway.

3) are these plants appropriate for my climate? Most of the places on my lawn where I have space to plant get a lot of full sun and it looks like these guys want at least partial shade.

4) can anyone give me tips or suggestions?

Wow, Your not kidding newbie,I will give a little advise, first, Look for rhizomes/bulbs not seed. If you could plant possibly where you get morning sun and afternoon shade it would really help the plants to not scorch, I know nothing about zoning or climate for Los Angeles, You can often find the rhizomes on ebay but try gingersrus He has a huge variety and enough information to fill several books. Also to gain more knowledge do a search on this forum There is a ton of info. from experts and beginners and many topics covered. Many people also do trades swapping for a variety or species and varieties within species. I hope this helps some

Thanks Cocomo...actually did not expect anyone to reply back..so did not check back for a long time.Just as you said it took a few more weeks from the time i started this thread...but both my ginger and turmeric have sprouted.Infact all 3 of my turmeric roots have sprouted and have gorgeous long leaves and the plants are about a foot tall.It was absolutely exciting to see these things come to life after a long time. Btw what location do you plant them ? Is full shade fine.Also plant them in 5 gallon coantainers or in the ground.Do they survive the winter in Z10 or do they die back? Thanks , norma

Beth, I'm sorry to say, but it sounds like they are dead. The thorniness of the canes means nothing, but the darkness does. If you cut into them, you will see brown instead of a green rim with a white center. But check the bases of the plants, you may have some good growth there. If you do, cut away all the dead stuff. I wish I could tell you why the one Zephirine is doing well and the others didn't. Was the ground different there? Was it moister or drier in that spot during the winter? Did it have more protection from extra mulch or a building? You'll have to figure it out. When the forsythias bloom is when it is time to trim roses and they really start to grow at the point so you know for next year. I do hope you don't give up on roses. Well being where you are, avid growers tend to do 2 crops of tomatoes because once the heat kicks in, the tomato plants may suffer somewhat (whether from the heat or from air and soil-borne diseases, etc., due to the humidity - even possible in containers). In any case, the weather this year has actually been amazingly favorable for you temperature-wise so far so count on getting lots more blossoms and potential tomatoes. And if you can get some good fruit set before the heat kicks in, then you'll be on your way! Basically, you don't need to "thin" your tomatoes unless you did want some extra big ones. Although you might get bigger plants with more tomatoes in bigger containers, you can still get a nice crop from what you have if you water consistently and give them some fertilizer (I have started using the slow-release types like "Tomato Tone" or "Plant Tone", etc). :)

Yes, with small plants, I would think three easily doable in the ground in that area. That would allow you to have a slicer, a paste, and a cherry. Just try to make sure that at least one of them is indeterminate, so that you have a continued supply of fruit after the others retire from production. I have my dwarf plants in pots on my porch. They include a Tiny Tim cherry in a a gallon pot, and an Italian Gold Roma, an Orange Pixie salad tomato and a Husky Pink slicer, all in three gallon pots. As a a "dwarf indeterminate tomato" the Husky can supposedly get to be about 4 feet tall, if planted in the ground, but I expect mine is going to be much shorter and smaller. That's my plan, anyway.
