Oriental lily 'Diamonds': beautifully scented!

Hello, I did so a search at this site but couldn't find any previous posts about this one. I bought a lily under the tag President's Choice (a Canadian grocery superstores label) - Diamonds. My experience so far has just been with Stella d'Oro which blooms one day and then happily produces many more blooms. Much to my surprise this "Diamond Lily" Â as I think of it Â does NOT wane in one day and even more surprising it has a heavenly scent! I had no idea that lilys had a scent. Has anyone else planted this one and can you tell me how hardy it is? It is bright white with very dark antlers (the label indicates a intense fragrance but typically for me I had not read the label before buying).

Patches, are you sure you're talking about a daylily? Sounds more like an Asiatic Lily to me.

Daylilies, such as your Stella de Oro are hemorocallis.
Oriental Lilies are of the species lilium. These are completely different plant species with different growth characteristics. Lilium do last for more than a day. Hemorocallis flowers each last for 1 day, hence it's common name, Daylily.

Both hemorocallis and lilium have varieties that are wonderfully scented.

While many of us do grow both, you may have better luck searching or asking you question on the Lily forum where lilium are discussed.

Scorpio, I know exactly what you mean about Oriental lilies. I fell more in love with them when we were in China - the streets were lined with large bunches on sale and the smell was everywhere. I bought some more bulbs last winter including Casa Blanca and Lovely Girl. The first LG opened on Sunday and I was amazed at how beautiful it is: large, perfect and beautifully perfumed. Then this morning it was Tom Pouce - about 5 years old with the pink markings but larger and perfect and perfumed. My Casa Blancas should open in the next few days and I can't wait. I also brought my son out to see and smell - and he's 24!!! Northerner.

ahhh, lilies! my favorite flower. until the red lily beetle arrives. but there's a way to deal with them (more later). as for which lilies to choose: all are lovely, but i am partial to asiatic and oriental. both are easy, want full sun and good soil. you may wish to cage the bulbs with hardware cloth when you plant to prevent critters from eating them. lilies will pull themselves down to the level underground that they prefer, but do plant them as instructed. the asiatics do not have a scent, but the orientals smell fabulous -- you can smell them across the garden! to deal with the horrible red lily beetle, get some Bayer Rose and Garden systemic spray (blue bottle). apply when it's NOT breezy and when beneficial insects are not in the immediate area. this will work like a charm for about 2 to 3 weeks, then re-apply. the beetles are about 1/2 inch long, bright red, no spots. if they show up in spite of your efforts, they are difficult to catch as they fall straight down when disturbed and land on their backs, so their black bellies are hard to see in the dirt. i put one hand very carefully under the leaf it is on and catch it , then crush it. its larvae are utterly disgusting, as they hide inside their own excrement and look like blobs of poop (which they ARE!). you can scrape them off and crush underfoot but it's a very nasty job. use a utensil, not your fingers, LOL! good luck -- i'm glad you will grow these for your granddaughter. have her choose some from a catalog! the photos are drool-worthy.

Good question, Penguinlady. I've had lillies come up white some years, other years the same bulbs came up normal color. I have no idea what affects the colors but if someone else does, I'd appreciate an explanation or even a guess. I thought bluestone had sent me the wrong bulbs when Pink Perfection bloomed white as the driven snow so they sent me more. After 3 years they finally came up pink, but different degrees of pink each year. This year a yellow variety I planted last year is coming up white with a faint hint of yellow on the edges. I figure maybe in 2 more years it will come up the correct color. Go figure. I have never had the problem with multicolor lilies or ones with spots.

Thank you both for the info - this is a great site, isn't it?! And as it turns out it is a lilium. My only experience has been Stella. I know see now that a lily is not just a lily! Wonderful surprise and I'll sure be do a search to learn more about the lilium variety. It's lovely to sit out on my little patio reading and enjoy the scent ... and then in the evenings I'll have my moonflowers (no sign of blooms yet ... too much rain up here!)

Patches you may be looking for the lillies forum there is one on the gardenweb the link is listed below. I grow some oriental lillies they are lovely and have a wonderful scent. I also grow some asiatic and LA hybrid lilies most of my lillies bloom before my daylilies start bloom giving more interest to my garden. As other folks have stated lillies and daylilies are different from each other.

They are different, but I just love the beauty of all types of the Lily Species. I really like the new Orienpets that is out.
