another lawn question

(reprised from the lawncare and groundcover forums):

I've been noticing over the winter that sadly my lawn is disappearing, but it is being replaced by some kind of weed--I don't think it's proper groundcover.

The plant is very low, looks like little tiny parsley. From a distance it looks almost like moss. People remark that it's good looking but I'm afraid it will be a problem in the summer.

Does anybody know what this might be? I took a digital photo and it doesn't take great pix but you can look on this site and maybe get a better idea:

I am thinking I'll have to smother the entire yard over the summer under plastic or something, and try and sow seed or re-sod in the fall, but let's see what happens over the summer. In the meantime, any ideas?

Thanks, Rose.
