Good hanging basket plant for full sun Atlanta

I have 3 or 4 hooks I'd like to hang some basket plants from around my patio and have no idea what would do best.

It is a full sun area, gets a little shade from the house first half of the day , then bakes from noon till dusk.

Will Ferns work there? What sort of flowers would work?

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Hi Bob~
Ferns will fry. I usually have scaveola (fan flower) or purslane (Portulaca). Both love the sun, trail over the baskets beautifully, and have lower water needs than most.

How practical are those self-watering hanging baskets? I've seen them at the garden center and they seem pretty pricy. But if it's worth it.... At this point we have some vinca vine, creeping jenny, hot pink ivy geranium and powder puff ageratum. (Not all for the same pots!) I really like the look of the trailing lobelia, and kept coming back to it at the garden center. But the label said "sun - part shade" and I worried that it might not like the blazing sun we get. We got the lighting up this weekend; rope lighting along the soffit the width of the porch. I think she wants to wrap some tiny fairy lights up the railings of the bannister on her side of the porch, which is obscured from the street by our little tree, but we're going to wait a bit on that. We've figured out how to handle the water, by putting in a garbage can "water tank" in the corner. We got PVC pipe and fittings to run from the hose on the ground to the porch, even spray painted it to match to brick. Now we have to figure out how to attach it to the brick! Appreciate all the suggestions!

Thanks! I've put the purchased one under my trellis, so it gets "slices" of intense sun, yet relief from the bars of shade. Hopefully that will satisfy both the impatiens and the lantana! LindaC, I know the kind of lantana you mean, this is not that perennial kind. The nursery had both kinds, so it's fresh in my mind. This kind of lantana has larger flower heads with fewer florets: strictly an annual. I just have not grown it succesfully before. I usually put things in my baskets that I know can take occasional drying out: so I just put the lantana in with petunias. So all mine can go in the sun. I love the petunias with osteospermum, but since those flowers always face up, I often can't see them in a basket overhead!? If the lantana works out that is a good alternative. I hope it grows to sprawl over the sides. The combo IS very pretty. Funny I just came back from a different store and they too had lots of impatiens/lantana combos. Thanks, dees, for telling me about the deadheading. I'll be doing the petunias as it is, so no problem.

Stuff the basket! Don't get skimpy (unless we're talking Fuchias, you don't need so many). Pinch your vines and annuals often, they'll get that lushness your looking for. We start with one application of Osmocote in the green bottle (14-14-14) and then Peters (20-20-20) every other week.

Thanks for the suggestions! I may still try the Blue Daze somewhere in my gardens - such a pretty color! I made a quick trip to one of my favorite nurseries yesterday and found some very BRIGHT lantana. I already have the low growing yellow lantana planted on top of the curved retaining wall that is across the driveway from this deck where the hanging pots will be so I wasn't sure I wanted more, but these are so colorful! I got three different ones - one is rose/creamy yellow, one is salmon/gold, and one is red/orange/gold. I had three of the trailing variegated vinca vine that I had salvaged from the pots last year when everything else dried up (the well went dry so no watering). I had kept those vines in a pot on the deck all winter - yes! they lived! So I put one in each pot along with the lantana. And I couldn't resist some yellow petunias - there is something about yellow petunias that just makes me grab my wallet! I love 'em! I tucked one little petunia in each basket even though I know they may not make it given the conditions. I'll try to keep them watered enough to live! I love the way the pots look - very informal and airy. And I'm not the only one! Within two hours hummingbirds were visiting that red lantana!!

I have the same question and really, there's not much that won't fry unless you, water 3 times a day, have a huge hanging basket and/or use moisture crystals.

My basket is only 12"-14" and it's one of those metal and coir
types. I 've had it in storage for several years because it was a bit too small to go all day without watering twice.
But I'm going to line it with plastic (with a few drainage holes ) and fill it with a bullet proof plant.
Probably scaveola...does anyone know off hand which portulaca varieties stay open all day? I haven't bought any in years but I might this year.
I was also considering pelagorium and some trailing vinca.

These baskets are really gorgeous filled with all kinds of annuals stuck into the basket from all angles, including the bottom and sides. But they weigh a ton! I've had to hang mine from very study tree branches to get enough support.

I think they all stay open all day. They won't open in overcast/rainy days. I usually plant this type in baskets.

i suggest roaming petunias and pelargoniums. i've had great success with both - we went with vinca minor and roaming petunias on the front porch this year.
