What are the largest Competition Size tomatoes?

Does anyone know what the top largest tomatoes grown are? The competition size ones. The only one I know of are Big Zac tomato seeds. I would like to grow and compete some in our county and state fair this year. Any help would be appreciated.

my biggest came from a celebrity. about the size of a football. it was probably an oddball

The record is still held by Burpee's Delicious. Big Zac may give more consistant big tomatoes. In general the large beefsteak types will win single fruit weight contests, but not beauty contests.

I think that doing the math gives you the base of what your price needs to be. There are markets where you can make premium dollars selling but these markets can be harder to break into and it takes years to build up a reliable customer base. The worst thing you can do is give your product away (unless donating to charity). It is very hard to start selling something you were recently giving away for free. You're dealing with two distinct types of customers, you have to handle things differently. On one hand - any type of competition is good for business. What we all want is for MORE people to shop at open air markets (either farmers market, fruit stands or flea markets). The only way to get more people into the markets is to teach them about it and that means getting out there and mingling with the masses. So even if you're selling extra tomatoes at a friends garage sale and even if you later do the math and realize you didn't make much money from it - you taught some people that vegetables can be bought somewhere other than the grocery store and that tomatoes don't have to be trucked from across the country to be edible. It is so easy to think that if you are the only person selling product X at the local farmers market that it will be easy to sell lots of it. The truth is that the only way to sell a lot of product X is to find lots of customers that want product X. If no one has ever offered product X locally then none of the customers going to that market know anything about it and only so many customers will pay good money for something they know nothing about. Imagine going to your local farmers market and seeing some strange tropical fruit that you've never tasted or even heard of. How many pounds of that fruit are you going buy. Some people are adventurist but most people aren't - they buy the classics, the maintstream, the usual stuff. The best thing is to sell at a market where a few other vendors are selling the same type of product - that way more customers will be shopping there becaue they've learned that they can depend on your market to provide them what they want. If you completely stand out, offering something unusual and foreign, you'll impress a few people but not enough to make big money.

Today I picked two Rutgers and one Jet Star. Not quite ripe yet, though they were turning orangish on the vines. One had some fruit worm damage near the top, but I got the bugger and will just cut out the bad part of it. I can't believe I actually harvested 3 tomatos! Am I dreaming or not? Can't wait to taste them and two should be ready tomorrow or the next day. They went from gold to orange in 1 day!! Scott, that is one oversized softball your little one has there! Does he like tomatos? So many kids today don't because they are used to the flavorless ones they experience on a flavorless Mickey D hamburger. Even I don't really know what to expect when I take that first bite of a fresh, grown my me, hopefully flavorFUL tomato. But, I'll be sure to let you know. We also had our first blueberry pancakes yesterday morning with our very own blueberries, Scott! Kenna enjoyed picking them and eating them. Susan

Largest AND most productive seldom go hand in hand. One factor is sacrificed to a degree for the other. Just ask those who try to grow record sized tomatoes. But there are 100's of beefsteak varieties that will produce up to 2 lb.ders with a fair amount of production. Big Zac is one I can think of, Giant Belgium another, Stump of the World, etc. Some are hybrids and some are open-pollinated. Removing blooms from the bloom clusters can also affect the size of the remaining fruit produced by that set of blooms. And of course there are many other variables too - soil, care, feeding and watering regime, weather, plant age, etc. Just browse through the 'Beefsteak' listings at any of the big tomato seed suppliers like tomatogrowers.com Dave PS: a variety named Delicious used to hold the world record but many question the actual validity of that record. Largest number of container tomatoes

Not all of my planned containers will be 25 gal., just for the bigger varieties. Some of them will prob. be more like 10-15 gal. I work in tree care/ landscaping and I have 5 or 6 truckloads of compost/ potting soil mix that was destined for landfill I got for nothing. I have access to as many free nursery pots of most any size. If I didn't have all the free materials, fuhgeddaboudit. I'm going containers this year because I need to rotate nightshades out of the garden for a season or two and I don't have other ground to grow them in.

I've been competing for a few years now and my most consistent results have been coming from Big Zac seeds that were saved from previous competition winners.
I have tried many different varieties over the years.
Tomatoes which have produced over four pound tomatoes for me are:

Big Zac
Church
BelMonte

In 2008 I held the Ohio State Record with a 4.48 pound tomato which was grown off of the variety "Curch". In 2009 I broke that record with a 4.83 pound tomato which was grown off of the variety Big Zac which was a seed from the 5.58 Timm 08. Many competition Growers are now considering the 5.58 Timm one of the first "proven" tomato seeds, meaning that this seed has produced more record breaking fruit than any other known tomato seed. I believe the 5.58 Timm is an F4 Big Zac. My 2009 record was short lived as Nick Harp produced a tomato last year off of the same 5.58 Timm seed which weighed in at 7.18 pounds and is the fourth heaviest tomato ever recorded.

Other possibilities are Neves Azorean Red, Giant Belgium, and Burpee Porterhouse. I'm doing Big Zack, Supersteak and Mortgage lifter. Forget about Burpee delicious, the variety seems to have lost something. My Supersteaks are consistently two to three times larger than my delicious ever were. What ever you decide, do it quick. These all require a lengthy season. Don't give up if you don't get expected results the first year. Keep trying new techniques, methods, varieties, fertilizers, etc. This is my third year and I haven't seen a tomato over 5 Lbs. Yet.
