Desert Rose won't grow, won't flower
Comments (20)Hi guys thanks for all your help- I am not going to repost in the other forum at this time b/c I think I got some very good information here. I went to walmart today and they were out of cactus mix. Sigh. They did have a bag of perlite tho- but I wanted to check with you guys first if this is the correct thing to buy, and if so- what do I do with it. I have a bag of miracle grow potting soil- I am assuming I need to mix these two together. I also have some small gravel- about bean sized. I plan to put him in a terra cotta pot since plastic holds the water and doesn't breath. I could use some instructions on the dirt mix tho- and as an aside- I purchased a succulent that needs to be repotted- do I use the same type of soil for him? I also have two lemon trees I grew from seed that I wanted to put into citrus mix, however they didn't even carry that this year. No they don't ever grow lemons, sometimes they flower but that's ok- the leaves smell really nice....See MoreNematanthus: Optimal Flowering
Comments (2)They definitely appreciate brighter light. Feed all year as they never rest....try 15-30-15 OR 10-50-10...notice the high middle number? fyi I've grown Nematanthus for years here in Tampa Bay, and a few times they were left out in our light freezes. No problem. They took brief dips to the 20's. My plants all bloom better in winter than summer, and I am guessing it is the cooler weather. Comments (0)I have a Moonstone plant. It forms buds, but the blossom does not open up fully, only about 1/3 of it. Then it turns brown and the blossom dies. Any ideas as to what I'm doing wrong?...See MoreWhy won't my kousa dogwood flower?
Comments (16)"I've observed the same with other woodies such as viburnum plicatum tomentosum some rhodies and a stewartia." With the exception of fruit trees, the vast majority of woody plants do NOT observe alternate bearing or biennial flower production. Once established, they will flower consistently year after year provided weather conditions are acceptable for the flowering. I would be interested in seeing any scientific evidence that would support the alternate year theory. With a degree in horticulture and many decades growing and gardening professionally, I have never seen any reference to this outside of fruit bearing trees....See Moregalileo
