Plant the Roses or wait?...

My order from S&W Greenhouse is...sitting in my living room...there are 5 Carefree Sunshine and 5 Home Run, among others...no choice...the barn, shed, is packed with stuff.

Most of the holes are dug for them...but "something" tells me to wait until next week to plant them...should I listen to the voices in my head (ha)...I'm anxious to get them in the ground...or, would it be safe to plant them now...

What ya' think?

ashli, are they bare root or in pots? If they are bare root, you can soak them in a pail up to a week. Pots you can keep longer, but make sure you water the pots.

In our zone, you can plant anytime, the ground doesn't freeze. I don't think it's going to get as cold as it was last weekend, if that is what you are worried about. It's actually better to get them in the ground and acclimated before it gets too hot.

Cool roses sells their roses on Fortuniana rootstock. That's a rootstock that is good for Florida's nematode ridden soil. Another thing about Fortuniana rootstock is that it increases the vigor of some roses and they can grow quite tall on it. It is also known for having a more shallow root system with less cold tolerance. Now the cold tolerance part is not a problem I would think in Florida, but if you have strong winds you might want to think about where you will place your pots before you fill them up with roses. I have grown quite a few roses in containers and in Oklahoma at least, the wind can cause major problems with knocking over even large containers full of roses...As for when you "up pot" a rose, there is no set time like spring. You do it when it needs it. Because you are in a warm climate your roses will grow quickly and you may find out you need to "up the pot size" on them sooner rather then later....Good luck to you...Maryl

You should leave them outside, as Henry says, unless the temperature should fall to -3 C, or possibly -2 C with a clear sky. Zero is no problem. Exposure to cold and bright sun is useful to help the plants, which were forced in a greenhouse, to adjust. Don't plant outside until they are safe from hard freezes.

Congrats, rosefolly, on getting rid of your pot ghetto, even if, as Ingrid all too poignantly reminds us, it's only temporary. Enjoy the moment. It will be gone soon enough. I'm "down" to a monster jacaranda in a 15+ gallon pot for the parkway hell strip, and a lovely Japanese maple of the same size which will require the SPing of an under (waaaay under) performing dogwood. (Aaaah, zone denial. I should have known it would never work.) I've also got a September Morn that blessedly has not yet arrived from RVR, but when it shows up it will be time to consider the rose underperformers, since there isn't room for everyone. Most likely candidate is Susan Williams Ellis, a new Austin that just got here, but has already reverted from white to pink. Kay

Susan, I personally *know* that, but the reason I'm asking for clarification is that the wording used by ginjj makes it seem implied that Just Joey is a rose bred by David Austin, not simply sold by them. I'm afraid I don't see where you think I implied they don't have multiple non-Austins. They have things like Altissimo, Ferdindand Pichard, Don Juan, Cinco de Mayo and such. I've ordered from DAR-USA since around 2003. I clearly only stated that JJ is NOT an Austin rose is all, do you not agree with my clearly communicated statement entirely? :-) Steven

You motivated me to go outside...it was misting rain, but working in the dirt is good therapy.

Buford, does your ground freeze where you are? I know you had more frost that we did in downtown Atlanta, but I am wondering if your ground really freezes?
Although we have had ice since I've lived here, the ground has never frozen.
Just curious. I don't know all that much about many parts of Georgia (or even Atlanta it seems).

Buford...they are container- grown Roses...I still have several yet to plant...hopefully tomorrow...(I'm slow) and have to haul off rocks from every hole I dig...
It all started innocently enough last Spring...I went to a nursery to buy my usual annuals... They had this huge Blushing Knockout Rose in a planter...displayed so that you had to walk around it to get to the annuals...a trap I know...I'm not fond of pink at all, but couldn't get that out of my mind...so later, I had to buy two of them and two red knockouts and planted them around a big tree stump...
Yes, Roses are an addiction.

girl, no, our ground here doesn't freeze at all during the winter. It has to be really cold for a time for the ground to freeze. I used to live in NY and it rarely froze there, maybe 2 inches if it was really cold.

I do get frost heaves from time to time if it rains a lot and then it gets below freezing.
