Native plant sale this Sat - Fernbank science center

Fernbank Science Center is holding its native plant sale this Saturday (18th) from 8-4.

The link is below, although they have yet to add a plant list. Last year their selection was great.

They do sell things quite quickly, so best to go early if you want something in particular.

This is at the smaller Science Center, not the big Natural History Museum.

It is just killing me that my back yard isn't ready for planting this stuff yet. Every year their list of natives gets more and more diverse!!!

Yes, the list is there now. I wish they would put the scientific names, not just the common names!

mayland, looks like you can get Magnolia tripetala there (Umbrella magnolia if that is what they meant).

It's a big selection - not everything is native, but most of it is.

The Etowah County Master Gardeners (in Gadsden) will have one greenhouse overflowing with vegetables AND two greenhouses with perennials, shrubs, and trees, plus a lot of plants outside. The vegetables will include about 2000 tomatoes of several varieties, several varieties of peppers, herbs, and others things. Most of the perennials are ones that have been brought by MGs from their own gardens and some are ones that aren't generally available at local nurseries. The sale will be Friday, April 20 and Saturday, April 21, from 8am-6pm. A half-price sale for anything that is left will be Saturday, April 28, 8am to 4pm.

Yes full sun, I am totally exposed on every side, I am starting from 0, scratch, completely bare landscape, new double retaining wall(6'x60' on top for mixed, 5'x68' mostly veggie on the lower level) , for my vegetable/any edibles garden/ mixed border, bachk yard. So I need shade trees, screening, wind breaks, privacy hedges, large evergreens, shrubs( evergreen, fruiting, flowering). specimens, etc. It's a MAJOR project, nothing like I have ever done, we are serious DIYers, this was contracted, but the plants are still my responsibility. I don't feel as lost, but stil not confident, because I don't know the plants here, and keep finding new ones. I 'll send you my list of candidates later to get feel, that will save back tracking with your suggestion. Feed back and other suggestions will work better. I posted about New English/Mediterranian garden I gotta get going now.

Oh, those are some nice things. I like dahoon holly, I believe it is one of the parents of Ilex 'Savannah' and other hybrids with American holly. I have two sweetbay magnolias myself - they have wonderfully sweet blooms. I doubt I can dig up the rest of that grass today - it has been raining non-stop since before dawn and it is now noon. But it will stop eventually and then I can go and pull out some of the stilt grass (invasive) near the creek before it goes to seed. Giving the grass to the neighbors benefits me - their property is higher than mine and when it rains hard, dirt washes into the street and into my yard! This grass will help stabilize the area (and is working already). And I needed the area where the grass was to grow a native crabapple and hawthorn. I decided it was ridiculous to let the grass have the majority of my sunny areas!

Hope some of you had a chance to go. They had a fabulous selection of native azaleas and Florida Anise as usual. Since I have plenty of those, I got Ilex cassine, two kinds of native spirea, some leucothoe axillaris, and a Carolina jessamine (I think I was the only person around that didn't have one of those, but never felt inspired to get one before). The next CNC native plant sale will be in the spring, but I believe if you want to buy something you can call them and arrange to do so.

Gosh, what a big list! Yes, I hope to get an M. tripetala, and maybe a Magnolia Ashei as well, which Jeff_Al recommended. And a Fringetree, and my husband wants another japanese maple...

Some things on that list i have never heard of -- need to sit down with Google and go through it. Yes, its a shame they don't put both latin and common names.

Last time there must have been a big line, i got there about 2 mins after it opened and all of the Fringetrees had already gone. I might have to get up early on Saturday!

GGG, there is a fall sale too...maybe you can buy then?

Of course, it remains to be seen what kind of prices they will be asking.

Cyrus, I recall the prices on shrubs being in the $12-18 range, mostly for 2-3 gal sizes. I thought they were very reasonable, and nice condition. I haven't bought trees or perennials there before so I'm not sure on the prices for those.

SH, I bought Mtn Laurels there in the fall sale, so maybe in fall they'll have them again. They were just the species though, not any cultivars.

The biggest problem is that the Fernbank sales always fall on Holy Comforter day sales. So I'll be busy shuckin' our wares over here in Ormewood on Saturday, and in the fall too!

well, the sale was great! It was busy, we arrived about 7.55 and there were about 20 people in line ahead of us.

I got a Magnolia Tripetala (the only one!), a Magnolia Ashei, a Redbud, a Halesia diptera (silverbell), and a Sweetbay Magnolia.

Will the Sweetbay be evergreen here? We want it as a screening plant, and from what i read, it sounded like it should be.

We also got a Rhododendron (Nova Zembla), a Hydrangea arborescens "Bounty", a Banana Shrub (Michelia figo), a lantana and some dwarf crested iris.

All the trees were in 3-gal pots and are 5-8' tall. The rhodie is big and covered in buds. I paid $145 -- felt like a bargain!

Cyrus, did you make it there? Satellitehead, they listed Kalmia on the sale list they handed out, but I did not see any there.
The next sale is Sept 19.

Yes, sweetbay magnolia is evergreen here.

I did make it around 9 AM. Probably most good stuff were sold by then. But I managed to pick a few perenials and annuals.

I would say that it was worth the trip.
