Ivy geraniums in hot humid climates

Hi has anyone had success with ivy geraniums in hot humid climates? I posted this question on the Florida forum, and didn't find anyone who was succcessful. Just moved, mine did great in Chicago on the south side in planters on a very hot, concrete stoop. Thanks

I purchased some Ivy Geraniums from Ohio and planted them in cocconet matt (don't know what they're actually called) hanging baskets in South Georgia. It gets darn hot and humid here starting in March through October. They did great considering the high humidity and heat here. I was surprised that they bloomed all summer and are still blooming. As you would know, they are much happier when the temperatures go down. I fertilized with the slow release about three times and watered them early in the morning--almost every day. Now my watering is less frequent. I spray my plants with Neem Oil on a regular basis, as fungus and insects are a problem here. I will be repotting them soon and have in mind to use something in the pots to help keep the soil cooler. I think that will help. I put them on stands that I wheel into the garage to protect from the frost, and wheel them out every morning.
My pelagonians did very well except the little catapillar guys drove me crazy. I ended up putting them all in pots with new soil mix.

Just dropping by to follow-up on my last post. I want to add that the plants would have done better if I had started the spraying routine with Neem Oil earlier on in the summer.

The Pelagonians and Ivy Geraniums are responding and very robust! I want to add that before I re-potted all the plants into cleaned pots, I washed the entire plant--including the roots, and I check them often to remove any flower bud, or damaged leaves. I keep the watering to a minimum. If I suspect there is any chance the weather will fall near frost temps, I wheel the plants inside the garage. I bring them inside if it gets a bit too windy. I've kept up spraying with Neem oil about every ten days.
I'll take cuttings fairly soon.

Hi Jenny, I'm no where NEAR experienced with this container growing stuff but I have to say I think the clay pots might help, when the problem is the ambient heat of the area as well as direct sun on the pots. Clay does breath so the roots dry out out quicker, but it also insulates the roots from the heat. And since they breathe, it enables you to water MORE without having to worry about roots staying too soggy. And I THINK (maybe Al will chime in on this) it's the temp of the ROOTs that often affect whether the plant takes up water and nutrients. Not the temperature in the air itself. I'm in the San Francisco bay area inland and my summer days get 90-100. My terra cotta pots (citrus mostly) seem to help not bake the roots. The ONLY plant I've ever lost (knock wood) was in plastic. You probably know, but there's another greek poster... goes by the name of "greekman" who has TONS of stuff on his balcony. I think he's in Athens, tho. Don't know where you are. And forgive me if I didn't read your entire post closely... but if you're able to construct some sort of umbrella, canopy, pergola across the top of your balcony that might help with the extreme heat. Oops, I see you said it didn't... but maybe if you went to a thicker shade block, who knows? As far as varieties... one thing I don't recall seeing on your list is figs or citrus or olives... things I always associate in pots in a mediterranean climate. (And they always sell them at our local greek festival every year.) I know nothing about growing those items (well citrus) and definintely NOT growing them in Greece, LOL, but have you tried those? One final thought... I agree with you I find succulents mostly unattractive. But I've beens seeing more and more I like that are drought tolerant and striking and you may be able to find a few varieties you like if it comes to it. Not all are prickly spiky things. Another idea might me some of the big grasses in a pot. Like a new zealand flax. Google the plant name and you'll see how big it gets. I just inherited a huge (like 7' tall one, about 8 years old) in a beautiful pot. It's foliage is striking but it could add height (for shade). Good luck this summer, -k

Maybe the heat does lighten Munstead Wood a bit, but not by much in my zone6 Kansas garden. Here is the first bloom on the second bloom cycle of my new Munstead Wood. Temps have been around 90. I took this pic this morning. To me, this bloom is a bit lighter than the spring bloom, but not as light and red (with no purples) as the other pics posted above. For ease of comparison, here is the earlier pic I posted of MW during its spring bloom cycle. There do seem to be some darker shades and more purple in this spring bloom, but I don't see a lot of difference--maybe more petals on the spring bloom, but colorwise, they are close. Now the question will be, what color will my MW be when our temps reach and stay at 100+ degrees. You know that is coming--I'm just thankful it hasn't happened yet. Last year at this time, we were already stuck in the 100s! Well, whatever color it is, I still think Munstead Wood is one of the most gorgeous roses I've seen in some time! Actually, I'm nuts about her--with or without her purple highlights! LOL Kate

LOL, well, different strokes for different folks I say. Folks here don't understand how people do it in places that freeze solid, so it all evens out. We have 9 months of gorgeous and three months of BLAST FURNACE. Even so, my hipps love it outside and do really well, and I'm a citrus and palm tree nut too, so it's paradise for me. Not for everyone though, that's for sure! I've had trips to the midwest in summer, and returning to 105 F with 7% humidity feels better to me than 93 F with 80% humidity, and certainly better than anything below freezing. But different people like different things, and all are good. I'm from Seattle (moved here in 2000) and I'm probably still overcompensating for having bit wet and chilly for so long. Can you have a nice rose mixed border in hot climates?

I have artemesia in the rose bed at the church and hate it. Rabbits don't eat it but the roots are invasive and it grows right over the top of the rose bushes. My preference in rose beds is other roses but I use society garlic to repel aphids, sweet white allysium to repel rabbits and look attractive, munstead lavender outside the rose beds to look attractive and use run-off water and food from the roses. There's clematis planted amongst the roses to hide some corners and fence but, except for mulching it really good and making sure it gets water, it has to live on whatever run off food it gets. Some herbs planted among the roses help to repel various pests. Instead of thinking more about a 'mixed border', look at what can be planted to ward off or attract pests, birds, etc. It's cheaper, more attractive and environmentally conscious than chemical control, too. You'll need to look at their mature size, water and nutrient requirements and determine how much time and space you want to devote to them.

Hi Brass Tacks,

Thanks for the follow up. What you are doing obviously works.

My experience in zone 5 is that the geraniums are fairly cold hardy. Things such as impatiens would die as soon as it hit 32. It would have to be around 28 or lower before the geraniums would bite the dust.

My Ivy Ger. is going nuts growing this winter. I'm in S. Bay Area of California and I never winted my ivy ger. She's been out ALL spring, summer, winter long and she's flouishing. I think the lowest it got here wass almost 30 I think. But she's having a ball out there blooming and all!

How hot and humid does it get in your area? Do you heavily mulch? It's not unusual for it to be 100, and very humid here in South Georgia--just north of Jacksonville GA.

I think I'll heavily mulch come this spring--maybe then I won't have to water so much.
