What are some long blooming, non flopping geraniums?

I was looking to add some new geraniums to the yard. I would like something that is neat looking and doesn't flop, and has a long period of bloom. If I could also get different colors that would be great too. Right now, I have the Samobor? with the dark markings and maroon flowers, and a karmina which is short with pale violet flowers, and a variety that I don't know the name of that is blue almost irredescent flowers but it is floppy.

What I have blooms early and has been done for at least a month already. So late bloomers would fit well too.

Geranium Sanguineum has a nice mounding form and lots of magenta flowers. Mine have been blooming for two months now and are still going strong.

Sanguineum is the only one I have that blooms long too. The others have a short bloom time, but at least Samobor has interesting foliage. I do have a very low growing light pink one that puts out loads of blooms in mid June, and has great fall color in the leaves.

Oops- just went to look up the variety of the pink one, and I see that the one I thought was sanguineum was dalmaticum. And drat!! all I have in my notes about the low pink one is geranium. That doesn't help much!! I'll have to dig through my envelope of plant tags, to see what all geraniums I have. I'll post if I find anything. (Record keeping gets away from me sometimes. I couldn't be a serious collector. )

I also have Splish Splash and for me it got about 2.5 ft tall bloom spikes on it this year, but the foliage stayed lower at about 1 ft and the leaves were the biggest of any geranium variety I own. It is done blooming now, so I cut down the taller blooming parts and it is back to a mound of leaves on long stems. It was really pretty in bloom, and even found it's way to mixing with a "Butterfly" Japanese Maple I have it planted under. The two colors on the geranium flower looked pretty against the soft pink/green/cream of the maple leaves. I also have 3 Rozannes and LOVE them. One is in full sun and is smothered with flowers most all of the summer, and the other two are in part shade and I bought them specifically to be filler plants. They are performing just as beautifully as I hoped. One is planted at the base of a Jackmanii clematis on a pillar, and it is reaching up to play with the dark purple blooms of the clematis, and it really compliments the Digitalis and Echinacea plants next to it as well. The third is planted at the base of a birch tree and currently mingling with a small section of herbs in a sunnier edge of one bed, and it is also filling space next to a Stained Glass Hosta, a clematis climbing up the birch, and some shade plants tucked into the center portion of the bed. I can't say enough good things about Rozanne ! I have a bunch of other perennial geraniums and I feel that this genus really is a workhorse in the garden and would not be without them. The groundcover varieties are perfect for the front edge of beds, gently spilling over onto pathways. I have also tried with the Bikovo types to pull off a chunk and re-plant. Yes, it does work very well, if you get some roots. The new plant will sulk the first year but be back to new next spring. As far as Rozanne is concerned, I don't think I would try to split her. It looks like most stems come from a single point/crown, unlike the spreading Bikovo types, so if you try to slice through the center, it would probably damage the plant too much. They are usually available locally, so if I want another one, I'd rather buy a nice sized established plant. They are well worth the $$ in my garden.

I would caution on the Claridge Druce - I had it in my small garden & loved it for about 2 years until it reseeded EVERY where.... I had another year of trying to get rid of all the seedlings (& am still finding a few that hid from me last year). Much as I liked the long bloom & strong plant presence, I had to banish it. You did not say if you are looking for more "weavers" or what size -- and cranesbills definitely come in all sorts of sizes from 8" to 3' in height..... so you may want to decide on that before you choose some others w/ long bloom as well. I find that some while they do not continually bloom, if you cut back will definitely rebloom several times thruout the season in our area.

earthnut- delish??? Are you a Philip A Craig fan? (JW & Zeeolinda Jackson on Martha's Vineyard) I am!!! You know, this year at fair, (where I bring bushel baskets of flowers and plants to decorate around our buildings,) I spent a lot of time with one of our fair announcers, who is blind. He had heard I brought all those flowers, and kindly asked questions about them. I started to think more about making my flower baskets 'accessable' to more than just sighted individuals. Especially since this gent and many others, spend so many hours making our fair great. I usually put a basket out by the fair office trailer to thank those folks, and that's where this gentleman is usually at, making announcements. Maybe next year's bushel baskets should have some scented pellies. I definitely want to put Lamb's ear, in there, and some Elijah's blue fescue or prairie dropseed for touch appeal, as well. The greenhouse just up the road from me has a great selection; maybe I should go do a little shopping. Jean

Curious if lack of watering was more of an issue than sun. You see we left for two weeks on a mission trip. During that time...we hadn't watered our flower beds. Hoping for rain which didn't come. When I looked up cranesbill...I found it can be located in full sun. Which makes me think lack of water was the issue. (We left last year as well on a mission trip. It's the only one in the yard that suffered) Step 1 Plant bare root cranesbill in spring or fall in a location which receives full sun to light shade, and has well-drained soil. Use a garden tiller to mix one cubic yard of organic compost per every eighty square feet into the soil. Space plants two feet apart to allow room for growth. Step 2 Apply a 1- to 2-inch layer of mulch to the soil surrounding cranesbill geraniums. This will conserve moisture in the soil and prevent the growth of invading weeds. Use bark mulch, shredded leaves, grass clippings or any other type of organic mulch. Step 3 Water cranesbill plants once per week to a depth of 24 inches anytime the temperature exceeds 85 degrees Fahrenheit. Water once every two weeks when temperatures are between 65 and 85 degrees Fahrenheit and once per month when temperatures drop below 65 degrees Fahrenheit. Cranesbill can tolerate drier conditions due to its deep, thick-root system. Step 4 Apply a granular iron and sulfur fertilizer, according to the manufacturer's instructions, only if the leaves of the cranesbill plant begin to turn yellow in the heat of summer. No other fertilization is necessary, as long as the soil was properly amended at planting. Step 5 Use hedge trimmers to cut cranesbill back to about four inches in height at the beginning of spring and before new growth begins. Remove spent flowers as they die to improve aesthetic appeal, although this will not increase the volume of blooms produced by the plant. Geranium cinereum 'Lawrence Flatman' is my favourite.
One of the longest bloomers in my rock garden.
It started blooming End of May and hasn't stopped.
Only 4-6 inches tall and the flowers
are deep pink with purple veins.

Hi,

I was just at Mahoney's today and they had a 75% clearance table of a lot of things that looked pretty terrible. Among all the terrible looking plants was this lone geranium sanguineum with a pink bloom on it. It only had a few weeds in the pot with it, but the foliage looked great and it was still blooming. So I snatched it up for $2.

I love those clearance tables because I always feel that if you can find something that is actually still growing well and looking good than it is pretty much a survivor and I have a better chance with it.

Geranium "Ballerina" is also a fantastic low growing geranium. I have it and Lawrence Flatman and both have been blooming since mid May.

Hi Michelle..

Thanks I am wanting to get a collection so the more names I have the better. If here it is August 8th and they are still blooming I would say that is pretty good. Are you deadheading?

"Tanya Rendall" and "Bertie Crugg" both have bronze foliage and are long blooming with tiny but very pretty flowers. "Bertie" is a groundcover type, but not aggressively so, and "Tanya" has low, trailing stems. Neither exceed 3 inches in flower for me.

I just added "Purple Pillow" this season and so far the growth is neat and compact. The flowers are deep purple with lighter veins and they really stand out against the silvery, gray green foliage. It has bloomed in flushes, rather than continuously, but may bloom more heavily once it settles in.

Hi Kate,

Thanks for that info. Sounds like you have a few geraniums. Where did you get your Purple Pillow? I have it on my list to get and wondered, I attached a link to a Jackson and Perkins photo of it, does it actually look like that?

I have approximately 25 hybrids/species/cultivars of hardy geraniums, and I really love them for their toughness and ease of care.

Although Jackson & Perkins enhances their pictures, my "Purple Pillow" actually looks like their image, though the first year flowers have been a bit smaller than described. I was very happy to find my plant at a small nursery locally for a very reasonable price.
