Advice re dead foliage in winter

I need some advice about whether or not to cut back dead foliage in winter. My wonderful husband and I are at odds on this one. Although our south Lousisiana winters are usually mild, we've had some unusually hard freezes already and have a lot of dead foliage that is brown and looks bad. My thoughts are: the dead foliage acts like mulch to protect the parts of the plants that are still alive. I don't care if it looks bad-even the front yard since it is WINTER after all! His thoughts are that the dead foliage does NOT protect anything and looks bad so should be cut back. Whatcha think?? The plants we're talking about include: Butterfly ginger, lantana, day lilies, elephant ears, Abyssinian banana, butterfly bush, Glossy Abelia etc. BTW, If anyone wants Moonflower seeds I, like anyone who grows Moonflower, have about a million and one seeds I will happily send.
