summer showers ivy geranium seeds: problems in germination..

hello I started last month for the first time 2 types of ivy geranium seeds, bought from swallowtailgardenseeds.com:

SUMMER SHOWERS BURGUNDY IVY

SUMMER SHOWERS WHITE BLUSH

Seeded indoor in the same container and same conditions...: now after 4 weeks after sowing I obtained 50% germination of the burgundy type but only 2 plants of 12 of the white ones!!!

in your experience they have a different germination time and I only have to wait a bit more? or I made something wrong??.... or maybe the white seeds weren't good and I should complain with the web site??? what is your opinion? thanks!!!

I am growing both Tornado Mixed colors and Summer Showers mixed colors this year. My Tornado have done well with 90% germination but my Summer Showers only did 50% and they were uneven in emergence. My seed was fresh and marked as to having 87% germination when tested. I have more seed and am planting this later today. Anyone else tried Summer Showers from seed?

I just germinated a packet of Burpee Summer Showers mix with a 100% success rate. I do all of my geranium germination in damp paper towels, stacked in a sealed container.

I put one variety in each towel labeled with a permanent marker, and stack them all in a single container. When I check each day for sprouting I also rearrange the stack of towels.

This year, out of approximately 150 seeds of various varieties I've got 121 now in soil, and only 12-16 seeds left in the container which have until Sunday to sprout. Try that and see if you get better results; just be sure not to use too much water.

Thanks for all the responses! The soil in the windowboxes hasn't been changed in a couple of years (and I didn't use pure potting soil even back then, since ivy geraniums don't seem to care), so I don't think it's very rich. The windowboxes do get direct sun all afternoon. I've tried transplanting small ones and big ones, and seeds, starting last fall, and they all die (or don't even seem to germinate). Right now I have a few nasturtiums that are still alive, but a sad ghost of what they used to be (tiny leaves, about 1" across, where they used to be 3"-4"). The ones in the yard are creeping across the concrete, ready to sneak in the back door; they obviously don't think it's gotten too hot yet. The good thing is, since they're doing so well in the yard, there's always a supply for experimenting with transplanting, and a source of seeds. I guess it could be a combination of things: maybe not enough water, and/or shade is too deep to germinate seeds. I don't water the ones in the yard regularly, but they could be getting runoff from the neighbors. Thanks! June

problem growing hollyhock from seeds, need advise and help

I wintersowed dwarf hollyhocks, mixed colors this year. I did not start them until April 7th. They are now blossoming. This variety is known to blossom the first year. A lot of other hollyhocks are biennials. They will blossom the second year. A lot of things can happen to hollyhock though. Some of my stands of hollyhock are having a difficult time with all the rain. I have rust setting in. I am busy amending all the beds with corn meal as well as the usual applications of manure. I am spraying them and cutting off the badly infected leaves. The clean up will have to be really good this year as well. I recall hollyhocks of my childhood as being a lot more carefree. They came back every year and seemed to do quite well!

I see you are in Zone 5. I am too, the Kansas City area. Here we get "bud worms" that ruin our Geraniums in July. But I have noticed the bud worms don't attack my ivy geraniums just the seed or Zonal geraniums. You might take that into consideration when choosing if the bud worms are a problem in your area. Just this morning I bought hanging baskets of ivy geraniums at W-M for $10 each and there are 4 ivy geraniums in each basket, a bargain for ivy types! Last week I paid $4 each at a nursery. Last year I kept zonal pelargoniums and a scented geranium in a VERY cool bedroom by a east facing window. The zonals did very well, with reduced watering , and the scented didn't do so well, but survived. They were planted in the same pot. I set them outside for the summer. In direct sun. The scented loved the sun, even more than the zonals. Thinking I would have great luck with scenteds. I love these and haven't had great luck keeping them over the winter. Also, I hate to put money into these if I can't keep them over the winter. One of the new scenteds was Atomic Snowflake. I love this one. Thinking it might do better in a warm plant porch with lots more sun and heat than my cool bedroom. In a weeks time it started dropping leaves and looking horrible. Whoops, I took it outside for a few more warm sunny days, cleaned off all the dead leaves and took it back to the cool bedroom. We'll see how she goes. So I'm still trying to find out if the Scenteds like different growing conditions through the winter than the zonals. Oh, and I have one stellar (Vancouver Centennial) that likes the cool bedroom with reduced watering throughout the winter. Sorry for the long post, and hope I made sense.

You must have had something right if a couple of them germinated. Pick those out of there and pot them up and then put the container with the remaining seeds in a plastic bag or cover them somehow and put them in a warm place like on top of the refrigerator, or on a cookie cooling rack on top of a heat vent and see if more don't come up. I've found that all geraniums seem to come up in flushes.

I got the summer showers mix from swallowtail. I have about 10 or so healthy looking plants which is good since I ordered 10 seeds and got 13. I put them on the heat mat and they came up in less than a week.

when I want to start any new new seeds that Im not sure how to start I go onto the Ball Seed website or Stoke seeds. they give great detailed info, from seed to bloom. As a small commercial greenhouse operator I count on those sites. There is also a book called (Seed to Bloom) I cant recall author though. Also seed companies do warranty their seeds. If they fail to grow You can get your money back. They just don't advertise it. Not sure if seed catalogs do the same, I don't see why they wouldn't.
