cestrum elegans 'smithii' - fragrant after all?
Comments (3)Hi Matt! I've no experience with Cestrum elegans 'Smithii', sorry. I was wondering if you've grown Cestrum 'Orange Peel' (a hybrid between nocturnum and diurnum)? Some sources state it has a sweet fragrance at night and other sources mention no scent. It's supposed to be cold hardy where I live and attract hummers (both a plus) but of course being the scent whore that I am I'm wondering about the scent. -Robert...See Morefragrant plants not so fragrant???
Comments (5)You're not doing anything wrong. There's been a lot of discussion about scents on the Rose Forums. After scores of posts about the differences and the lacks the general consensus was that people smell things differently and there are certain scents that can't be picked up at all by some people. Also plants produce more and less scent at different times of the day, air temperatures and humidity. So keep trying. There was a poster on here that couldn't understand why her night blooming jasmine didn't produce a scent for her. Come to find out she had an early bedtime and the jasmine doesn't release it's scent until 10 pm or later. All the plants you mention very smell nice to me and are fairly strong. However, I have noticed that Rangoon Creeper smells strong at times and other times I get very little scent. I think it has to do with the age of the blooms and the time of day. Lucky for certain family members some scents don't bother me as much as they do them. I don't mind skunk spell so I'm the one who gets to bathe the dogs when they get into skunks. Plus I'm the one who got to clean out the freezer with venison and fish when we came home from vacation and found the power has been off for a week. I don't especially enjoy those smells, not by a long shot, but they don;t gag me either. Bottom line: scent is a very individual thing. But I understand how you feel. I love fragrant plants....See MoreWould you share your exerience with Cestrums?
Comments (27)My recently purchased Cestrum labeled 'Orange peel' is yellow. It really doesn't matter that much to me, but kinda' confuses things for people who wanted the orange color. It may be that the grower mislabeled them. Below is a shot of my mature cestrums starting their spring through fall blooming season. The oldest plants, five years old maybe, are 10 ft. tall. They came from Boss Jim, who thought they were labeled 'Orange zest' when he bought them. Whatever they are -- what a beautiful hedge they make!...See MoreBlooming in May!
Comments (86)Thanks Robert! Sorry to make you choose a favourite child;) Btw you are leading me down a dangerous path with your brugs and bruns. (Wikipedia says brunfelsias are small trees!) So will I one day be dragging these monsters into my basement?! Oh my poor back! I finally fed my gardenia and it has rewarded me with a wealth of huge flowers. Huh, flower food, who would've thought:)...See Moremattdiclemente
