Bromeliads in SE Georgia

I grew bromeliads out doors in Central Florida with no problems. I was always told they were a tropical or indoor plant.

Moving to Glennville (south of Savannah) I have mine potted and during the winter I have them either in doors or the larger ones covered on a east facing patio.

A friend told me her relative grows them out doors in South Carolina. I was looking on the garden forum and I see pics of some in Italy out doors covered in snow and they are doing OK.

Has anyone growing bromeliads out doors in this area without bringing them in doors during the winter? My did better on the pation that some of my 'cold hardy' plants.
