what kind of jasmine sambac is this- pic

one of my friend gave me a cutting that I rooted and this is the first bloom. The fragrance is very strong and am wondering why this is not available in nurseries. The flowers are mulitipletal and I am pretty sure it is not grandduke because the leaf structure is different from grandduke and the flower size is bigger and different fragrance than grandduke. Can anyone identify this variety?

Sounds like a lack of humidity problem to me. I'd set the pot on a pebble tray & then when watering, water to overflow such that the pebbles are in water but the pot is ON TOP OF the pebbles, not in the water. That will help. If it's a long time since the plant was repotted or the soil was refreshed, could the rootball be hardening? If so (or you feel it was a long time since new mix was added) take a stick & poke some holes straight down into the rootball from the top. Then when you water, water into these holes, helping to ensure that the water actaully gets down into the rootball (rather than the water go btwn the side of the rootball & the side of the pot, leaving the cental part of the rootball unwatered).

Your plant is probably sunburnt. Plants grown inside don't develop enough of a waxy substance in their leaves that protect them from the UV. Even if you had it in a sunny window, it won't produce this substance, as the glass cuts out so much UV that the plant has little need of it. You should have slowly acclimated the plant to the sun over a couple of weeks. By keeping it in the shade for several days, and then slowly increasing the amount of sun it gets it will normally adapt without any problems. What you need to do right now, is to move your plant back inside, or, if you still want to have it outdoors, into full shade. Do *not* fertilize it right now! Don't overwater either - it's going to lose most of those sunburnt leaves, so the plant's water requirements are going to go down sharply. If your plant was healthy before you put it out, it should have enough energy reserves to put out a new flush of leaves. Once you see those new leaves forming you can fertilize with 1/4 strength (or weaker) fertilizer. You can slowly up the strength as the plant recovers over the summer, but don't overdo it. Fertilize no more than twice a month. If you put the plant out because it was dooing poorly, and you hoped to revive it, it will be more difficult for the plant to recover. BP

Hooray for blooms and hooray for Kemistry finally adding another plant to his collection! True Blue, Your gritty mix is quite gritty with those huge bark chunks. I think when your particles are more evenly sized you'll see more water coming out, at least I know I do! :) My Mysore Mulli is quite lopsided. I'm hoping if I can keep some of the rooted cuttings I took from it alive then I'll plant them in the pot on the bare side to even things up! -Robert

Hi Leah! You're welcome! I'm using the 5:1:1 mix for my single tuberose that I'm growing in a pot. The leaves don't look that dark green so Kemistry might be right that tuberoses might not like pine bark so much but who knows? My other single tuberoses I'm growing in the ground though the dog tends to trample them when she's chasing after squirrels. :( And yes, I suggest putting your Jasminum molle into a smaller pot and only watering when the soil starts to dry (again a moisture meter is a godsend, takes the guessing out of it). But you can also just look at your leaves as to when the plant needs water. Oh, and of course tilt your pots after watering! ;) Tiaree, I hope you find a MOO! If not you can always order a plant online. :) You might also like 'Belle of India' or 'Mysore Mulli' or 'Grand Duke'. If you do find another jasmine a fun thing to do is pick the fat un-opened flower buds right before they open and float them in a dish of water. The flowers will open up inside and the scent is truly amazing! :) -Robert

Kemisty, I do not think it is not gd supreme, the plant is vigourous in its growth unlike grandduke and it has 2 leaves at each node instead 3 leafleds.

Radhavall, my friend does not know the name of it and she had this plant since past 8years. I may take few more cuttings from her plant to root more plants.

Kandhi,

Can you take another pic of the flower. I looked at my Grand duke, it has 2,3,and 4 leaves sometimes. And Grand duke flowers are also variable from looking like double petal Jasmine to looking like mini roses..If the smell is indeed different, then it could be another variety. And If so can you count me for a cutting? I do have many varieties of plants for exchange if you so prefer...

Mike and Radha, Sure I will if I get to have few cutting. Since I am in VA we bring plants indoors and they are not in good shape to take a cutting. By june there may be new growth on the plant where I can ask her for some clippings again this year. Last year I took 3 cuttings and only 1 rooted well.

Hi Kandhi,

It may be mysore mulli. just check logees or "T"O"P" "t"r" o"picals website. The other thing is there are 3 varieties of Grand Duke of Tuscany. One has 3 whorls, then the other has 4 and the ones sold in stores here have 7 whorls(layers of Petals). Folks back in India have told me that and I remember seeing diff. varieties as a child! Kandhi where in Virginia do you live? I am planning to visit there soon and would love to get cuttings of diff. jasmine.

nca270, yes, this kinda looks like mysore mulli but mysore molle has 2 whorls of petals this has more. I have sent an email to you.

Kandhi--What kind of soil combination do you start your cuttings in. Do you use a root hormone and do you cover lightly with plastic to retain moisture.

Helenck, I user cactus soil mix with perlite as medium to grow the cuttings. I also use the rooting hormone, but I was able to root the currtings without dipping in hormone too. Covering with a plastic to retain humidity is a must without that the cuttings won't root. Here is the pic of the bloom that was taken last week on the same jasmine plant that was started with a cutting.

hello, can someone on this list please inform me as to how I can get a grand duke cutting? I live in Oregon and would love to have some cuttings of the plant with the flower on the very top of the thread. I am sure this is the jasmine grand duke of Tuscany. I would be happy to mail some cuttings of what I have. I had 3 exotic types of Jasmine in my home: Arabian Jasmine, Maid of Orleans Jasmine, and Grand Duke Supreme jasmine (this one is very small so I could give cuttings on this one at a later time).
