Want to start local garden club. Advice?
Comments (3)I sure do wish you good luck on your endeavor! I've attached a link to the National Garden Club site, from which you can visit all sorts of state sites. You certainly do NOT have to join these large organizations to have your own club, but some of them might have some good tips for you. I've been a frequent speaker at the garden clubs in coastal SC, where they are saturated with these organizations. ALL of the chapters were state and national members. All paid dues. (If you charge dues, what will the money be used for?) Most of them took turns meeting at members' homes, although the larger groups required facilities. If you are interested in getting together with neighbors only, I would avoid the hassle of being too organized. However, if you do your homework, you may be surprised at the response. Your local newspaper will be helpful in getting the word out...call them and ask that a reporter to a story on the subject. Comments (6)We price mostly by pot size. 2-3 gal ferns and grasses are $10. Rumor has it the peonies will be $20, but they should be in bloom. Most perennials in quart pots are $4 or $5. What sells well varies quite a bit from year to year. Shade plants usually do well, as do plants people generally recognize. They should preferrably be potted up several weeks before the sale so they have time to settle into the pots and not look wilty. We haven't done well with shrubs and trees, and the problem might be they rarely look good at sale time. If you are going to be at a festival, how far is the table going to be from the parking lot? Plants are heavy, and people won't buy much if they have to haul it around. Also, try to have at least one person on hand who really knows their plants, and several reference books. Somebody is going to end up trying to explain something like hardy geraniums to somebody who thinks they could maybe recognize a daisy....See MoreNeed help in starting a raised bed veggie garden - Soil Mixture ?
Comments (10)SCgirl, I used untreated 2x12 lumber and heavy duty deck screws, and the bed dimensions are 4x8 feet. For each bed I took three eight foot pieces, and cut one in half to make the ends. Avoid the pressure treated lumber ( the CCA stands for copper, chromium, and arsenic). Cedar is best, just make sure you're sitting down when they tell you the price...you can still get a few seasons out of plain untreated lumber and save some money. The floor you see is landscape fabric, which will let moisture through but keep down the grass. I'll cover the pathways with cedar mulch. Inside the beds, I'll cut out the landscape fabric so I'll have a good soil interface for earthworms and beneficial microbes. Before the soil goes in I'll add a layer of cardboard just to make sure no grass/weeds have a chance to peek through. Comments (6)Is this just gardening for fun, or is the school making a commitment to the garden as an ongoing project? Does it tie into curriculum, and will there be education or experimentation involved? If this is for high school students, hopefully you can get some help from local agricultural educators, the UC Extension service, and your local Master Gardeners. If seed saving would be an ongoing part of the project, there are sources that will provide both free seed, and educational materials. I have provided a link to one of the better resources, the Community Seed Resource Program. I too donate seed to support civic projects... but because fraud is so rampant on the internet, I will only mail to institutional addresses. You can reach me via PM on my member page....See MoreMissouri
