which camellias are blooming now (and why?)

the particular one I am wondering about is a brilliant deep pink, almost to magenta, maybe Shishi-Gashira compared to pictures I've seen on the web. it's blooming like mad here in Walton county for at least a couple of weeks now. the ones I have seen are only about waist or shoulder high, absolutely covered in blossom. it's a double, not crinkly or ruffly, fairly standard camellia blossom, small to medium leaves, standard medium dark green.

and is it normal for it to be blooming now or is it just the weird winter we've been having?

Because I want one:) Or maybe six. If I have room. And I need to know so I can find them and then put them in the right place in my garden.

It's sounds exactly like my Camellia, which I got at the Home Depot in Loganville and it's called "Mrs. Thomas Cobb". I tried 'google-ing' that name and all I found was a "Mrs. Charles Cobb", no "Mrs. Thomas Cobb", but my blooms have many more petals than the Charles variety.
I wish I kept the tag on it, but I swear that's the name of it (since I picture some Southern woman sipping lemonade on her porch and I would laugh about the name).
I would call that HD since they talked me into getting that camellia several years ago.

Oh, and my camellia has always bloomed about this time of year.

My Camellia japonica 'Governor Mouton' are blooming now and that is normal for them. Red and white splashed flowers.

i pruned, shovel-pruned and replanted at the beginning of November so i have lots blooming right now! Maggie and Bishop's Castle are the ones to beat, they should be named everblooming roses. Sharifa Asma is not far behind and covered in blooms and buds right now. Baby Mlle. Jeanne Philippe just opened a few delicate apricot flowers that faded to pink and baby Lundy's Lane yellow popped out a single, gorgeous, buff yellow bloom. It's a found pernetiana but this first bloom reminds me of the teas. Lady Emma is still very shy about making and keeping leaves but she continues to make those amazingly scented flowers so i keep her. Baby Belinda's Dream has produced a few HUGE peonies of ruffled pink. Love it! DbB is the queen of the garden and just taking a break in between amazing flushes. She is finally old enough to scent her flowers and always seems to keep a few pink seashell blossoms on hand. Her sister Duquesa, just a baby, teases me with the hope that she will be a very good rose. Abraham Darby continues to somehow escape the shovel and has covered his small self with buds. Jude is a much better roses and budded up as well. Gruss an Aachen spend the summer hiding under the lantana with WS 2000. They are a bit worse for wear but blooming. i'd forgotten how beautiful GaA can be. Molineux is another workhorse pumping out flowers shaded from lemon yellow to dark apricot. Short and very upright habit tho, really should be grouped in threes. And my favorite rose, La Reine i think, although i am not entirely sure about the ID. Bushy and covered in buds again. She repeat several times a year-four or five maybe? i would keep her even if it was less often. Oops, sorry...i seem to have gotten carried away! Well, roses will do that to you and i know you'll understand ; ) Celeste-Fantastic!

The problem may be spider mites. Spider mite damage is seen through the top of the leaves and will turn them bronze and if left untreated, the leaf will turn almost white. Usually starts down the center of the leaf. YOu can be sure of this by turning the leaf over. You'll see a very fine "dust-like" substance on the bottom of the leaf. This is not like scale which can look like white-cotton candy. It brushes or wipes off easily. You can treat with a horticultural oil, but you have to make contact with the mites for it to work. Simply washing off helps, but they often return. You can also use a miticide.

Thanks for the link and additional information. I've bookmarked the link and I added some "location" comments to my little plant notepad that I carry around in my pocket. I'll do some research so I can make (relatively) informed choices. One of my neighbors has a truly magnificent sassanqua (presumably, but now you've got me wondering) espaliered against their wooden fence. I can't wait to see it bloom. In the meantime, I just couldn't wait so I allowed myself one mail order camellia purchase. It's one of the newer super-hardy (for camellias anyway) types. I just like the blooms so I thought I'd give it a try. I'm sure I can find larger local specimens for less, but it was just a fun splurge for me. Now I'll try to wait until camellia season. I learned a while ago that Camellias set out their buds for future blooms in mid to late Summer and require a lot of water during that time. And because in PNW Summer often has little to no rain if you do not irrigate your Camellias (and also Kalmias) you won't see any flowers next season. I experienced that with Camellia 'Kumasaka' which I planted close to a very thirsty maple tree. After no blooms for two years in the row, I did some research and then watered the heck out of it in August and finally got the thing blooming next Spring. I know that it's too late now but try to really keep the plants moist in the coming Summer (I watered mine every other day for a month) and feed with very diluted fertilizer for blooms (higher number in the middle) and wait. My two very large potted Camellias 'Yuletide' placed next to the northern wall of my house are full of buds and some of them are finally opening. Unfortunately the frost we had for last week probably killed many of them. I hope some of them survived or I will be really upset.

my camillias have been flowering since the middle of December and still have lots of buds on them, plus new shoots. They have looked so good for the past couple of months as they are the only color i have in the garden at the moment, and they are a deep pink color. Just beautiful!

Don't forget there is a camellia forum on GW. I am no camellia person, but I have heard that there are primarily two distinct kinds: camellia japonica (blooming now) and camellia sasanqua (which bloom in fall and early winter), plus some others like camellia sinensis and camellia oleifera.

I have the beautiful with double Nuccio's Gem, the pink and white swirled (huge flowers) Frankie Wynn just declining, and a mystery double red. The red is really cool, as the inner petals are shorter and more dense like a pom pom.
There is also a small flowered, single pink with yellow stamens blooming. Again, unsure of it's name.
All of these were given to me by Girlsaylor who used to be on this forum but moved to WA state. This is their regular bloom time. I am thinking they may rely more on light hours than on temps to regulate bloom time?

Well, I have all of one bloom on 3 bushes! Could I have it in too much shade? How much sun do they need?

Pins, decideous shade is best. They can take more winter sun, without leaves burning, but I had major scorch when in full summer sun.

I love camellias. I have a beautiful tree form camellia that is blooming now. It has fragrant blush white blooms that are 2-3" across. I think it is a cross between a japonica and a fragrant species called lutchuensis. It is a really beautiful plant. I am astounded by the sheer number of camellia species we DON'T grow. There are many that are hardy here, and we only grow a handful.

I have a white camellia that has been blooming since Dec. But I have another one called Yuletide that has not bloomed at all. It's only about 3 years old but doesn't bloom and was wondering if anyone knew why? It's in partial sun under tall pines as are others who do bloom.
