what is the season for growing vegetables from seed in Georgia?

I currently live in Cape Coral Florida. I will be moving to Georgia in February. The city we'll be living in is called Brunswick. Unfortunately I don't know what the zip code is or what the gardening zone is. I am assuming it is similar to the gardening zone I live in now. I realize it is farther north than Florida, but I am assuming that the climate will be similar because while farther north, Georgia is still in the southern part of the United States. I am guessing it's roughly zone 9. What I would like to know is what is what time of year (example: Summer to Autumn; spring to summer, etc.)

is considered the best time to grow things so they won't die. If possible, would like a month range (March-Dec, May-October, etc.)

I would also like to know what type of vegetables can be grown in Georgia out of the list provided below:

*Green Beans

*Sugar Snap Peas

*Broccoli

*Bell Peppers

*Cucumber

*Romaine Lettuce

*Carrots

*Tomatoes

*spinach

*Onions (which type of onions grow best in Georgia; red or yellow?)

These are the herbs I would like to grow. Would like to know which of these can be grown in Georgia:

*Dill

*Parsley

*Cilantro

*Basil

*Lavender

*Mint

*Garlic (can garlic be grown in Georgia?)

*Sage (???; again can it be grown in Georgia?)

*Rosemary

What seasons in Georgia are considered ideal for cool weather crops? What seasons in Georgia are considered ideal to grow warm weather crops. I've never done a garden before but I know some vegetables/herbs grow best in cold weather and some vegetables/herbs grow best in hot weather.

I know that where I live it's best to grow vegetables and herbs in the winter and in early to late spring. I know that in summer it's the worst possible time to grow anything; it's just too hot for anything to grow well. Does this rule of thumb apply to Georgia or not?

Also what is the quality of soil for gardening in Georgia. Can you plant things and will they survive in the type of soil Georgia has, or is it recommended to do container gardening or to do raised beds?

Your best source of information would probably be one of the CAES Extension Agents in Brunswick (Glynn County).
Residence location will determine type of soil. The barrier islands, St. Simons, Sea, Jekyll, etc. are mostly sand based, but the mainland is a mixture of several types of soil and varies with the distance from the coastline.
The Extension office will have publications on vegetable/herb growing and possible variety selections for the area or can advise from personal experience.
Most of the publications are available online in PDF and they can advise which ones are most applicable.
The mainland area around Brunswick is generally considered to be in USDA Zone 8, but for all practical purposes, you could probably grow anything hardy to Zone 9, since it is influenced by close proximity to the Atlantic.

I tried to call the extension office in Florida because I was interested in growing a raised bed garden; the soil in Florida isn't suitable to grow anything from seed. I tried to call the county extension office in Florida and they said they'd send me a PDF via e-mail of when to grow what. That never happened. As a result I don't trust to call the extension office again because although they promise to do something they seldom do.

If you could give me a link to a PDF file of when to grow what in Georgia and what can be grown in Georgia, I would appreciate it. Thanks for the advice and suggestions. Not trying to give you a lecture, I'm merely explaining the experience I've had with the county extension office with the department of Agriculture.

Pepper seeds are usually good for a couple of years if stored properly, cold and dry. Lettuce is notorious bad to save over from year to year -- you really need FRESH seed every year -- I make it a policy to plant ALL of the lettuce seed I buy every year, because it is just wasted otherwise. Um, I'm sure there are such lists and discussions, I just don't know of them -- there's probably something right here on Gardenweb. From personal experience, though, I've found that most seeds are good for two to three years if stored in a freezer, tightly sealed, with a dessicant like silica gel or kitty litter. The things that DON'T store well are lettuce, onions, leeks. I've not had any problem with any other common veggie seeds.

Another short note to Henry... We don't plant roses in the fall down here because the climate is too warm for that. Perhaps in the Northeast and Midwest you can get away with that, but not here. Check the facts before you make statements like that, OK?

Damping off symptoms can be caused by any number of very common and ubiquitous fungal diseases. I'm a firm believer that the symptoms can be avoided. I've never had a problem with damping off....not in my greenhouses as a professional nor in my garage as a hobbyist. (Knock on wood) Careful attention to pre-season sanitation practices is very important. I spend a little time sanitizing my germination flats, the shelving, my tools, everything in the vicinity of my germination area. I germinate the seeds over heat, but grow on in pretty chilly conditions. I try to strike a balance between temperature, relative humidity, soil moisture, and light. "Other than transplanting, some cold vegetable seeds do not even grow well in warm temperature indoors. What I heard....." I think they may have meant some plants do not grow well in warm temperature indoors. Seeds are fairly tolerant of a wide range of temperatures but the plants, once germinated, aren't nearly as tolerant. Cool season crops that are prone to bolting in the heat of mid-summer outside will also bolt if kept indoors in warm temperatures. So things like lettuces, spinach, some herbs, other leafy greens, broccoli, cauliflower, etc. that do not tolerate outside heat will also not tolerate inside heat. Does that help. Dave

Sorry that you had a bad experience with your County Agent's office. I'm sure the person you spoke with was a volunteer, manning the phones for a few hours to satisfy the requirement for attaining Master Gardener status.
Most Master Gardener applicants are very conscientious and helpful, some are there only because it is required to attain MG status and could care less.
Attached is the List of Publications available from the UGA CAES library. Scroll down the list to find the planting time for vegetables and other subjects that may be of interest and download them.
I would send an email to one of the Glenn County Agents and ask for information about your planned vegetable garden and see what response you receive. I do not believe they will fail to respond and could be very helpful, otherwise there is no need for their services! Let us know the outcome.

essence you're moving into zone 8b. this zone runs roughly from the jacksonville to tifton, ga. area and covers the coast of georgia. everything in your list will grow well here depending on the variety - but mostly anything will have no problem.

the humidity here can be unreal but in brunswick you will have a steady wind blowing most of the time. look for august temps to reach 110-115 with heat index - like clockwork one to two weeks out of the year. i've never had crops die from heat - as long as you give them plenty to drink. tomatoes will not yield as well in august but will produce again in september and october.

the time to get seeds started is in mid-february indoors to get an early crop. last frost usually comes just before easter but sometimes right after - this year my guess is before.

you live below the piedmont ridge so you will have a sandy soil with clay a few feet down. from macon down was all under water not to long ago so maybe you will want to do container gardening till you get an idea of what you're working with. there are plenty of horse stables and cow fields around for you to get free manure from so just get a few loads and condition your soil.

georgia is a gardener and farmer's dream. more varieties of plants grow here than anywhere in the world - between tifton and macon being the hot spot. if you need any help or want any seeds email me. welcome to georgia.
