Please help a lonely gardener

I have visited this site for years, but today is my first posting. I am looking for some garden friends who might be interested in starting a small informal group, that gets together to visit, visit gardens, swap plants, seeds and stories and obsess over all things plant oriented. I have been gardening for ten years, and have a slight seed obsession, but I do believe I have it under control. Would love to host some informal garden get togethers and meet other gardeners in my area. Anyone out there interested?

Thanks for the response, I was wondering if anyone actually comes to this site. I live in the Baltimore area of Maryland. I guess in your area, if you haven't already, you could check out a local plant swap, I think thats what I might do.....when I'm done transplanting!

As with most bagged products, this stuff will be: 1) made at different facilities regionally, 2) made using a basic recipe which is not very exacting for the cheap stuff, and 3) as a result it may have just about anything in it when you buy any given bag. Finally, 4) if it gets wet in transit or storage it's going to be trouble. This is a good reason not to buy the cheapest, especially where potting mix is concerned. I've bought cheap compost bags but I was prepared for the results and it would be tilled into the soil. Potting mix, you don't have much margin for error.

What a nice surprise! Looks like the roots are still alive and it put a shoot. What kind of hydrangea is it supposed to be? Other than adding some mulch, giving it the same care it had before (ask your mother how often she watered it, how often she fertilized it, what fertilizer she used and how much she used), I would do nothing else. Bring it inside when it goes dormant and the leaves dry out. Once in a protected garage or shed, water it once every two weeks or so. Take it outside when Spring temps arrive. If you insert a finger into the soil to a depth of 3" or and it feels dry or almost dry, water it. I normally water a little bit, wait for the water to drain and water some more. Keep it in a location where it gets morning sun, afternoon shade and some protection from wind if the area is windy (the wind can dry out the soil faster than if placed in non-windy areas). Potted plants need water more often. And all the watering makes the nutrients leach out so they need to be fertilized more often too. During the growing season, I would fertilize but during the winter months I would not. If you water and fertilize as often as she used to when she was in the house, you could give her the plant for Mother's Day or some other special occasion. But if you are panicky of killing it, just drive over to her now, give it to her now and let her take care of it as she used to do!!! Ha!

Denise, here is a link about lighting. That lamp, to me, is not appropriate for the space without having other lighting, not because of the size, but because the light doesn't point downward. It points upward/outward. It is the type of light you use for ambient lighting of the room. JMO. (Edit: I have to admit I am not a fan of torchiere-type lighting in any form at all, so this may impact my view of that particular floor lamp) Groveraxle, and others on Houzz, are much more knowledgeable in this area than I am....please read these houzz articles to start. Oh, yes! Our garden swap is fantastic, and I've made some good garden friends there.

Most of the folks live in the 'burbs -- I'd like to try to get something started along the lines of what you're talking about for some inner city gardeners.

Hope you get some lgood local feedback -- my sister lived in B'more for a while, and we had a great time landscaping her tiny little yard. It's a beautiful city and a great climate to garden in!

garden web used to have a "zone buddy" function that you could search by zip code and then find gardenwebbers near you to post messages to-- it seems to have diappeared.

but you can still search for people at gardenweb who are in your state.

Scroll to the bottom of the page and click on to the "member pages' tab. a list will come up and you can then click the search member line and follow directions. than start contacting members in your area.

Thanks Bill for the input, its a shame I'm getting more responses from Ohio than right here in my neck of the woods...I don't know if I can make the plant swap here (although it sounds sooo good!) as I will have too many seedlings I will be trying to part with at that time... want to do an informal plant sale of my own here, because the following week, we are trying to get away for a couple of days to west VA. Has anyone taken a spring trip yet to Longwood/ Or Surreybrooke? How about Felicita?

Have you tried the Mid Atlantic Forum here on Gardenweb.

There are 2 main reasons you get responses form gardeners in Ohio: your post is right next to the Cental Ohio Spring Swap posting (and thats a popular one) and we all like to help each other. There is also a Baltimore Ohio in Central Ohio so if you miss that you are in MD then we think you are nearby as well.

So i hope you are finding more people to garden with in your area.

Try the Mid-Atlantic gardening forum. That covers Baltimore, Maryland area. I met some really nice gardeners last week at a plant swap from that area. I heard or read that there's an upcoming tomato swap in Baltimore area coming up.
