Blooming is underway and I'm camera-happy! Photo heavy

OK...I am finally going to get my act together and start posting photos of daylilies. (Note that it's late here on the East coast, I got my Mom showered and to bed, cats got their treats, teenage daughter crisis was averted, and my dishes all done. I am sipping my pinot grigio as I do this posting, so hopefully this all goes as planned...haha.

Now I warn you in advance that my daylilies are all NEW, and I don't have whoppers and clumps like the rest of you yet. I wowed you with my roses, but its going to take some time before you gasp in amazement at my daylily pics. And I don't have a fancy camera or even the know-how to operate the darn thing other than point and shoot. Many, if not most of my daylilies just arrived mere weeks ago so most of these are going to be ffo shots, and some are nowhere near

their potential. In light of all the amazing pictures I have enjoyed here on the forum, these pale in comparison and are rather humble.

The only thing going for me, really, is that mine are just starting up and I can provide a daily dose of daylily lovin'

They are totally gorgeous, it must be a real delight just walking around and taking it all in. I know I'm always so excited when things finally bloom and you get to see if what you bought was what you thought you bought.
I especially like your 'eye of hurricane' triplets.

WOW!!!!You have some real beauties,I just love CELTIC VEAINS and also KAZOO too. They are really gorgeous, and them asiatic lilies are gorgeous, all of them. I love lilies, too.Your photography is really nice, too.

It really depends on what you want to use it for. If all you want are quick snaps in good light, then almost any point & shoot camera will do. (And 6MP is plenty for prints up to 20"x30". I have several hanging on my walls now.) For challanging situations, the pack gets a lot smaller. But for true versatility in all situations, it's gonna cost you. For one thing, no one consumer camera can do it all. Period. Even a DSLR (which I have) requires different lenses and filters for wildly different lighting situations. Add to that artificial lighting (flashes) and you can see why I said it's gonna cost you. The true key to it all is to learn more about taking a photo than pointing the glass end towards the subject and pushing the shiney silver button. Not meaning to sound condescending, but that's the basic fact. If you don't understand the basics of exposure and the relationship between aperture and shutter speed then you will get a lot of disappointing shots. However, once you learn WHY a shot turned out bad, you can learn how to do it right. True, there will always be situations that you might not be able to get a good picture. But the more you understand about how photography works, the easier it will be to identify those situations in advance and plan accordingly. Like carrying a tripod in your car at all times. (I do...) I am a frequent reader and poster on dpreview.com and I see the same thing over and over....people buying a new camera because they think it will "do it" for them. Then being disappointed that it doesn't work any better than their old one. Wonder what didn't change? Image stabilization, for example, is a great tool, but it's not a magic bullet. Given the choice of IS (or VR in Nikon lingo) or a good tripod, I'd pick the tripod every time. But since that's not always practical, I also have one image stabilized lens and am loooking at getting another one. (Longer zoom.) That doesn't mean the tripod is going in the yard sale though. Hmmm...reading back over this I'm afraid I may have comme off a bit strong. What I'm saying is that you should make sure your camera is truly limiting you before looking at a new one. My first camera was a Fuji pro-sumer model that I bought because it had full manual control. I WANTED to learn the basics. I switched it to manual and left it there for several months. Only when I understood the choices the camera would make did I feel comfortable moving into ANY auto mode. And yes, I am VERY happy with my camera.... Click to enlarge in a new window.

Thank you all for your sweet comments. I'm blushing a little. =0) We are all lucky to have something we love so much that we can share and enjoy with others. With so much trouble in the world, coming here with all of you kind and gifted gardeners gives me hope. Bungalow house- That's a great shot. He looks a little scary. Those really are Big Eyes. LOL Although that's not the one I had in mind. I found a great site listing all Nova Scotia butterflies. It has tons of butterfly information. I will post the link in case anyone is interested. I found the two I had in mind. The black one with the white strip is a White Admiral and the orange and brown one is an American Copper. I recognize many others from the list as occasional visitors. Annie- Wow, a White Tiger Butterfly, that is so special!!! I wish you were right. The White Admirals I have are common here in Nova Scotia. Kathi- I live way back in the woods and I don't have any cats. So I can't be sure. Although the Bob Cats we have back here from time to time have never touched it. It seems to me that Lavender lass posted something about her cats getting into her Catmint. Maybe someone else will know. Kay- I know what you mean about not having your camera. I have missed countless opportunities to capture great wildlife shots because my camera's sitting on the kitchen counter. Frustrating! At lest our flowers don't run from us. I knew it would be great to be back here....thank you so much for looking at my pictures and commenting! I enjoyed your comments. To answer your questions, the pink rose in the first photo with the foxgloves is the Canadian Explorer rose 'Frontenac'. It is completely hardy to the tips here in zone 4 and yes, it blooms like that every year, completely loaded with flowers. It is one of my most recommended roses for the north along with the Buck rose 'Quietness' and fellow Explorer rose 'Champlain'. Champlain is the red rose in photo #9 on the left. Yes, the foxgloves re-seed themselves every year. It all started a few years ago with ONE plant that my daughter gave me for Mother's Day. I end up having to dig lots of them up and give them away or plant in other spots. This year there were over 60 plants! The pink plant in photo #5 is the rose 'Mozart'. It appears to be a plant not a rose because it had rained and it was weeping down into the lilies. It does have a cascading habit anyways. No, Julia, my daughters and son do NOT help me in the gardens or yard at all. I have to beg them just to go out and look around. Frustrating to me that none of them inherited my gardening gene! But I take the grandbabies out in the yard to look at the flowers all the time and hopefully out of the 5 boys one of them will be my garden buddy. And for the most part the roses are planted behind the lilies and perennials but I like the messy cottage garden look so I don't always follow that rule and some roses tend to fall over into the other plants. Oh, as for the heuchera. Its kind of in a strange spot, the south side of my house but tucked up against a small nook/eastern facing wall that goes towards my front door. I really want to say that, during summer.... mmm, somewhere between full sun and partial shade. Soil is pretty clay heavy fyi, this part of indiana is really bad for that, though with the way the land is shaped water doesn't really pool near these plants.

I like your photo of BARBARA MITCHELL a lot. And by the way I didn't comment on your rose post, so I will now. Your yard and flower beds are magical. I would love to see them in person, but alas, you are too far away. Your rock borders brought me back to when we lived in Connecticut, every time you dug a new flower bed, you dreaded the clink of the shovel against yet another rock. But they do make great borders. Now I live in Delaware, a place totally devoid of rocks, stones and even pebbles. Keep the pictures coming, your gardens are great.

I like Celtic Veins a lot as well as Frosted Vintage Ruffles and Dragon's Eye. I love huge, bright eyes or watermarks. :)

Frosted Vintage Ruffles is gorgeous but I love all the pics. Barbara Mitchell is so pretty... I had that one but I can't find it this year. I may have traded it last year. I'll have to get it again.

You already have some gorgeous blooms! I love the Rapid Eye Movement Twins, and Frosted Vintage Ruffles. The Eye of the Hurricane Triples fill my liking for multis really well. You have some lovely blooms, and they will just look better next year. I am so glad you decided to get into daylilies.

Celeste - You don't have to apologize for these. They are gorgeous! I think my favorite photo is Barbara Mitchell with the lovely white roses. Pick of the Litter, Kazoo and Rapid Eye Movement also caught my eyes and held them. I love the speckled Asiatic lilies and all your charming statues. Keep posting!

Your gardens are simply amazing and your daylily pictures look good to me. It just takes time as you know for those daylilies to settle in and grow. By next year your daylilies will be as amazing as the rest of your garden. Plus daylilies are pretty easy compaired to roses :-)

Being camera happy is a good thing if it means photos like these. All your dayliies seem to be flourishing, because they are putting on quite a show. Just think about what it will look like next year. As far as favorites, I like Frosted Vintage Ruffles, Annabelle's Blush and Pick Of The Litter, and I especially like the photo of the Tiny Todd lily. Avedon

Hi everyone,
Thanks to all who commented (or even looked & didn't...LOL).

I was straight out today building a brand-new HUGE rock-bordered bed for more daylilies. I had a truckload of loam
delivered and was digging those rocks out of my woods for hours...and pushing them to their final destination via wheelbarrow. I then worked on building the rock walls which
took the rest of the day til nightfall. I am exhausted and my whole body aches, so I will post new pictures tomorrow.

I just wanted to tell you all how much I appreciate your friendship and compliments. Nighty-night!
