They often don't eat much. It's best if they get off the nest once or twice a day to eat, drink and poop, but it's hard to force them. Some people take the broody and carry her a little way away from the nest, so that she is forced to move around a bit. When she does get off, she may run around making semi-hysterical noises. A broody's metabolism slows down while she is setting, so she doesn't use as much energy. But if you are worried, hard boil an egg and mash the yolk for her. Maybe moistening it with a bit of milk is a good idea if she's not drinking. Put some in the palm of you hand and hold it under her beak. Nudge her beak with your hand. She will likely get the idea and since it is "room service" she probably will eat some. Velvet Sparrow has a ton on info on broody hens on her website. there was a woman.. who in my mind.. was from the south [which could mean anything south of TN for me] ... rather flamboyant ... a southern bell ... and she always had young male protege's ... [and i dont mean to infer anything] .. i met her in 1998 at the indy conv. and for some reason i am thinking her name had something to do with dell.. dee ... della ... i know she passed quite a while back.. seem to recall something in the journal about it ... at least 10 years ago .. i wonder if bruce might recognize him??? .. or the woman above ... ken

If it's outside and you let it produce seed it will sow itself around. It will not be 'confined' by the basket. It doesn't 'take over' but it does take advantage. Consider how easily a seed found the nice juicy growing medium in your pot even though it is hanging up under a porch. This is is a highly successful weed species which has spread itself around the world. It can germinate, grow, flower and set seed in a short period on any patch of bare soil and will do so year round in mild winters. Although it is edible few people would consider it anything but a weed in a cultivated situation. I'd get rid of it personally. Either by eating it or composting it.
