Have you heard of Peter Raven?

He's the director of the Missouri Botanical Garden, and is going to be in my town to lecture on "A sustainable world: our shared responsibility". It's free, but there are so many things I frequently want to do, and do not have/take the time to do them.

Have any of you heard him speak? What's he like?

Wish I could help, but I have never been to the gardens and didn't even know who the director was.

If he was in my area I would definitely go.

Me too on the curly hair thing!..I have always fretted on getting my hair cut...its thin and extremely curly..and the stylist have no clue what Im talking about because they have this thick straight perfect hair,,,and they ALWAYS cut mine way tooo short... Now..zap to my daughter, she HAS now been a licensed stylist for over 2 years...the first time I let her cut my hair off she listened!!...Now zap to 3 days ago...I let her cut my hair off again.....SHE DIDNT LISTEN!!!...and again...I have hair short enough IF I DONT blow dry it..it will be a very frizzy..very curly...very scary...to my head fro.... Why is it the experienced ones NEVER LISTEN!!! THINK they know everything???..LOL..she cut at least 8" off my lenght!! ACK!!! HATE humid hot days..at least with VERY short hair I do...sighhh... Now you can REALLY tell when its going to rain..LOL Dena

I do not think it was a place for a person to hide in because the locks were on the outside. If someone went in and the doors closed and locked, he'd be trapped. I did not see a way to operate the locks from the inside. If the locks could be tripped from the inside, it would be a perfect hiding place. You set the lock, enter the room and slam the door shut. A searcher would not have the combinations and could not open the door, He'd assume that there may be something important inside, but never suspect it was a person. It could have been a wine cellar. The paper money may be collectablies. Those bill may have had nominal value or there could have been a few that were very expensive. Those should be appraised. I sense these held value above the normal because thery were carefully enclosed in sealed mounts. Those items could have been a smuggler's cache. For example, back in the 1980s, it was illegal for US citizens to buy Chinese postage stamps. There existed a small scale smuggling operation. A relative living in Isarel would buy Chinese postage and bring it on his person to the US to give to a family member or partner. In exchange, the partner would give him something that was scarce in Israel. Its all speculation until we find more about the contents and the construction of the locks. It did not seem built right for a storm shelter that doubled for other uses. Not right for a bomb shelter as well. A bomb shelter would have had a supply of food and water and a weapon. 'Tis mysterious indeed.

I have not heard him speak, but since the garden is here in St. Louis...I've heard alot about him. He's been director of our wonderful garden for years....and he wins a lot of world-wide awards. I'd take a chance and go.

Having met the director of one of our university arboretums, I'd say "go" if you can make it. These folks are usually conducting research that benefits gardeners as well as involved in the propagation of new varieties.

Earlier today, I went to the mobot website, and found information on Dr. Raven. He sounds like quite an interesting man. I think he's going to be talking about ecology, and not gardening, from the sounds of the article. There are so many events that come up that I want to go to, but end up not going to. (I guess I said that already.) I'll let you know if I make it or not.

I just looked up the date Elvis died, 8/16/77. DH and I were at the Missouri Botanical Garden that day, in the area for a Jackson Browne concert in Edwardsville, Illinois. We were walking next to a white building of some kind, when they either made the announcement of Elvis's death for those who were there, or else we heard it from a radio that was playing. It was a great place, and the Japanese garden had recently been put in, but it looks like there have been a lot of additions since then.
