Last call on Quarter Pounders

If my bookkeeping is correct, I have seven requests for "Jack's Quarter Pounder" cuttings. They are from Eric, Henry, David, Akram, Eddie, Jim, and Giuseppe. If I've missed anybody, please let me know. I will be shipping within the next few days. For photos of the QP, do a Yahoo search of Friends of the Fig Society.

Jack,

Not to pop up your bubble! I do like 'Brunswicks' when they
BEHAVE. However, here in the NE (at least) they tend to
very easily get spoiled by moisture/rain (another worst fig,
first year, seems to be the Madeleine des Deux Saisons).

According to Ray Givan, Brunwicks are most suited for
the SW; so as other fig-newbies know. As I said, I like
the taste of them when behaving, have 3 kinds, QP, RI, Bru
but I am very seriously thinking of getting rid of them all,
together with some others, mostly due to space, which
I have never did before yet (I tend to hang to all for dear
life), but the time may just have come...

What a wonderful memory, Gandle. Although our memories differ by a few decades, they are so alike in many ways. I guess that's how farm life is...no matter what generation you're from, some things will forever be alike. I didn't have a quarter mile lane, though. Our house was right off the road. However, my great Uncle lived a mile away, just up the road, make a right at Steve's corner. Steve and Anna were brother and sister who lived on their ancestral farm until both were pushing 100, and their farm was at the cross road which was the half mile marker between our farm and my Uncle's farm. Since that cross road divided Steve and Anna's farm, it was forever known as "Steve's corner". After church on Sunday, while the grown-up's had their social hour, my cousins and I would make our plans for the day. We'd set a time, usually right after Sunday dinner (which was always served at 12 noon promptly), to meet at Steve's corner. In the summer, we'd slip around to the back of Steve and Anna's and drink from their pump. In the fall, we'd grab an apple off their apple tree. When Steve became too old to farm and rented out his barn and fields, we'd sneak into his fields and feed the horses. After exploring the world, my cousins and I would walk back to Steve's corner and say our good-byes. The walk to Steve's corner was uphill from our farm, but on level ground from my Uncle's. I never minded that walk one bit. A few years ago when I went home, I made that walk for old time's sake and, while the road seemed to have gotten narrower, that uphill walk seemed like 10 miles! The farm house was always small, it only had 4 rooms...a kitchen, a living room, and 2 bedrooms. Growing up, I had to share a bed with my Grandmother, and as I grew, the house seemed to have gotten smaller. I moved into the house briefly when I returned from Europe back in the 80's, and I realized what a perfect size that house was for 1 person. Especially when all that person did was eat and sleep inside it, as my Grandmother did. She worked in the fields during the day, when she came home in the evening she'd wash up and go out to the gardens. It took me all these years to understand why. It was her therapy, just as my gardens are my therapy. Such wonderful memories...

I knew about Paradise Nursery and next year was going to be my main order to them, but they are already out of the mailorder part of their business I saw on their webpage last night (while searching for "Quarter Pounder"). I was pleasantly surprised to see the renewed interest in my Quarter Pounder. I still have a couple of trees that need cutting back, and IÂll be glad to share some cuttings. The largest of the fruits that IÂve been able to harvest before the squirrels got it weighed in at an even six ounces. To see a picture, you can Google "friends of the fig society" with the quote marks in place and then click on that group that, with my computer, is the fourth down the screen. Four-ounce brebas are fairly routine. As reported above, the fruit tends to split and sour in wet weather. With good weather, itÂs a sweet fruit and makes nice preserves. The skin is a bit thick and not too tasty. A bit of history: About 8-10 years ago, I visited my late fatherÂs old home place in southwest Atlanta, Georgia to try to get a cutting of the fig tree he had given me some years earlier that I tentatively identified as a Hunt. It had a long neck, a soft skin, never split, and was really delicious. The new owners had piled trash up on that tree and killed it. They said I could take the other bush that was out in the middle of the yard, however. It was about five feet high with five trunks. I dug them all up, planted them, and managed to get two of them to live and thrive. I had no idea what kind of fruit they would produce. I was astounded when the huge fruits started appearing the next summer. I have since sent out dozens of cuttings to fellow fig enthusiasts all over the U.S. and Canada. A couple of years ago, I worked out a trade with Paradise Nurseries and they rooted and sold about 150 of what they advertised as "Jack ThomasÂs Quarter Pounder," as I recall. Then they went out of business. I glad so many people have enjoyed raising and sharing this Brunswick-like sport.

Mine (in Maryland) has been killed to the root several times because I never winterized it. This past winter I wrapped it and filled the wrapping with straw, leaves, whatever. Anyway I now have a very bush like tree and I like it that way. Multiple trunks give me lots of low to the ground fruit. My father has a brown turkey that is much more tree like (2 trunks) but the figs only grow at the highest most point which basically means climbing up on the roof to reach. -J

Anybody also wishing cuttings from my 3 Brunswick variants,
(QP), RI = Red Italian, or plain Brunswick,
is also welcome (recommended for fignuts in the SW only).
You just pay shipping. Sorry I use USPS Priority Mail at
a nominal $4.60 shipping cost to you; and due to a couple
of recent 'bad-apples', I have to request payment first.
Not sure how much I have, definitely not for 50+ people,
but maybe for ~10, first come first serve...

Jack's QP does well for me in pots. The breba crop never fails to ripen. The main crop is at risk of splitting from the rain most years, but there are many other types of figs ripening by then. Its a keeper for me. Thanks again for the cuttings sent years ago.

No bubble busted here, Gorgi! I've often said this is a great "novelty fig" because of its size. I've had some to weigh in at six ounces on a postage scale. With very wet weather, it's a disaster. It's also only a 5 on a scale of 10 when it comes to taste when raw. It's a good cooking fig, though. It would be my last choice as an "only fig" or where space is limited. (Scott, you're on the list.) If anyone else wants a cutting, please email me your MAILING ADDRESS at Editor@RewriteRight.com. With all the requests I have, I don't have time to track you down if you're bashful.

My favorite still is a fig I identified some 20 years ago as a Hunt. In moving, I lost all traces of it. I gave out a dozen or so rooted plants to members of the Friends of the Fig Society in Georgia, but most of those guys are dead now or missing in action. I would trade all of my figs for a good rooting of that one fig. I know it's out there somewhere. It was a medium-sized fig with a long, long neck and stem that allowed the eye to hang down. It had a very thin light purple skin and the eye usually exuded a little drop of "honey" in the morning when they were dead ripe. They never soured or split. And the taste was to die for. If anybody ever runs across it, please let me know. I'll trade you the QP mother tree for it! :))

As of today, Jan 9th 2008, all my 3 free Brunswick (variant)
fig cuttings offered above for the SW, have been spoken for
and no more is available.

Everybody who sent me a mailing address has been sent their cuttings today. Sorry, but that's all for this year. Check again next January if you're interested.

Thanks Jack!

Your cuttings will take up a (quite literally) hallowed place in my Church's Community Garden. And since it is an "open" garden, I can assure you that many will benefit from the fresh fruit and byproducts such as preserves, jam, wine, etc. and of course any cuttings from responsible pruning practices.
