What do you do if your potted fig tree breaks dormancy.....

I just went down to check up on my potted figs in the basement and noticed one grew 3-4" (green) and two others are developing leaves. My basement is normally cooler but its been somewhat of a mild winter so far.

What should I do?

I moved mine to a warm room and gave them a window.

I figure they know better than I whether they have slept enough or not.

Do you have them in a dark area ? I keep my small containers in a corner of my basement and close off the corner with a few large cardboard boxes. I do the same with my large plants in the garage. Bill.

Figs starting to break dormancy?

I posted almost the same question on Dec. 15th. A month and a half later, the leaf buds look almost the same. A few are slightly bigger and seem to be considering opening, but they are just sitting there. I had planned on just bringing it inside the house and putting it in a sunny window, but until the leaves actually appear, I am leaving it where it is.

Sunnibel7 im in a colder zone but have similar circumstance with mine stored in attached garage. They break dormacy earlier because when it just starts to get warmer out the garage temps get much warmer and wake up my trees. Worry about both day and night temps, i bring mine out when the temp is at least 50 out, then at night they get wheeled back in garage its just to cold and windy in early spring. When night temps start to match or exceed the 50 degree mark then i leave them outdoors. Mine are elder trees. Yours as stated seem very young maybe a season or 2 old? My suggestion to you would be leave it by window and dont try to make it stay dormant or slow it down its a young plant and there usually pretty vibrant at that age. When the weather starts to get warm bring it outdoors for a while then back in at night, do this for a while till the night temps do not drop so drastically, little by little is best. Perhaps a 60 degree minimum daytime temp is good to start with then back indoors at night, i bring mine out like i said at 50 but there older . You said this Also, I boldly root trimmed my Negronne after reading much info. here on the subject! (Scary!)I read that the tree should now be "secured to the pot" to allow the fine roots to grow without breakage... Ok, how old is your negronne? Is it in its final pot size, I ask this as one usually does not root prune but simply pots up plant into bigger pot then when plant reaches final pot size they worry about root pruning in that pot, well either case after root prunning when you repot the plant it should not need support, only time i use support is for a smaller plants trunk to grow straight such as something like a wooden dowel or similar. I would say it has less to do with the pot color and more to do with the soil drying out / heating up too much. If you absolutely have to put pots in full noon sun, mulch heavily. You could try shading the pot base maybe with a "tree skirt" that wraps around made from burlap, shade cloth, or something like that.

Yea I thinks its pretty dark in the corner I have them sitting in, atleast not any direct sunlight. Do you think its the lil bit of reflecting light bouncing off the boxes that might be waking them up or the temps?

I mean if they were still outside they'd still be dormant wouldnt they w/out them being in the dark 24/7?

Im now thinking about making room in my heated (only 55 degrees) garage, atleast in there I know its cooler than my basement.

Any advice would be nice!

It seems to me that your room is too warm ... I target a temp between 25deg and 40deg. From my experience, my trees break when the avg temp > 45 deg.

I have only one bearing fig, name unknown, green figs. It breaks dormancy at the end of Dec. After New Years I move it into my living room where it grows rapidly and produces 3 crops. The first in early spring is usually the largest. It had a first crop of 42 figs in its second year. I'm a novice at this but it works for me, at least it does for this particular Fig.

I tried to keep several fig trees dormant in the fridge in Houston last year along with my cuttings. Even in a bare-rooted state, a couple of the trees (along with two cuttings) put on growth while refrigerated. Both of the trees (moderate sized) survived without die back. Surprisingly, one of the cuttings (an LSU Purple from George) rooted this year.

The weather in NJ is cooler now and should be for the next ten days. At least in the Princeton area, there are no days in the forecast with temps below 30 during that period. You might want to leave it out while you can to lull it back too sleep and then move to the coolest part of your garage when the weather gets colder.
