Strange Angel, wandering jew are said to need bright light to retain their variegation, but I have mine hanging on my balcony in a north-eastern exposure. It get a bit of filtered morning sun then the sun moves behind my building. The plant has been growing vigorously for three seasons now and hasn't lost any of it's variegation so I'm sure that spot will work for you as well!

I use those coir-lined baskets a lot, and you're right--they drain VERY well and it's more of a problem keeping them moist (I have them outside and it's hot here.) I like them very much--no need to worry about over-watering even when we have one of our periodic downpours with several inches of rain. I think it's important to think about the kind of hanging basket--or pot--you're using when you pot a small plant into a larger pot. If it's plastic, I wouldn't go too much larger unless it's a fast-growing plant. If it's unglazed terra cotta, you can go to a bigger pot, and in a coir-lined basket still bigger. And of course the mix matters, and whether you're going to put it outside in the wind or inside in a naturally-cool house, like in the beautiful PNW, or----- There's always more than one thing to consider! And for what to plant in it--good suggestions so far, but I think pothos tends to prefer going up a moss pole, or a tree like I'm lucky enough to have right now--the leaves are already starting to get quite large. By August they should be huge, and they only do that when they grow up instead of hanging. Have you thought about begonias or maybe gesneriads? I have a columnea and a eucodonia in coir-lined baskets and they are sending out shoots through the coir as well as upright. Pretty neat!

I always kept them in the cool basement in front of a large window on the west side of the house. The basement isn't heated and gets down to 38F. The bush types are in 19" pots and are trimmed to within 6" of the dirt. They are kept moist-never allowed to dry out. The standards are trimmed back to 4" of the main trunk and also kept the same way the bush one are. I've 3-4' standards that are 36 years old. The main stems are about 9" around. The biggest problem with the standards is keeping them out of the wind. Even as big as the main stems are they still are very brittle. It is important to keep them feed regularly with a high nitrogen fertilizer and changing 1/3 of the soil each year-I use worm castings and mix in a couple cups of bone-meal, 1/2 cup of blood-meal and 1/2 cup of Epsom's salt. Don't be afraid of cutting them back in the spring when you put them out again. I usually strip all the winter growth off to where they were cut back to in the fall so all the new growth is strong and healthy from the increased light they get outside and you won't have to deal with easing them in and out as so not to sunburn them. I always pinch back 2 times early in the growing season. This gives you a very full bush or tree.

work backwards from May 9 and begin hardening them off a week earlier - so I guess you out to have started earlier this week. Just protect them from wind and strong sun. That's it. you can use any forms of protection for as long as you don't block sunligh.
