Annuals have kept the fall color coming (marigolds, purple fountain grass, zinnias in the background at the chimney).

Nice pictures, everyone! Some of you seem to have had better tree colors than I did this year. The trees in the forest behind my house mostly just went from green to brown. :-/ Maybe because it's just been rainy and cold.

The vine around my shed... ugh. I can NEVER remember the name of it! I remember, then forget again. haha. It's um... not winterberry... okay... I'll describe. :-)

It gets berries. They start as yellow, then turn orange, then burst open to reveal a red berry inside. I think I've also seen it in a bush form. Argh. I don't know why I can't remember the name. It's not even a hard name. Anyone? Anyone?

It is obviously dropping leaves in that picture. But, it was gorgeous this summer.

This is the west yard, where (believe it or not) there are no flower beds......just trees and shrubs. I love leaves on the ground and will just leave them.

Everyone's pictures are lovely, I posted my fall color on the gallery side, we've had some very windy days so all our color has blown away. We usually have another week or so before all the leaves are down. The porcelain vine still has it's berries but the leaves are history.

I don't have a pic to share as I was busy camping when my fall garden looked good and we are into winter now. Perhaps I'll be able to post a winter pic in a few days since we are in a storm watch for the next couple of days ;)

That spectacular purple plant of foxesearth is Strobilanthes, aka Persian Shield, a tender perennial often grown as an annual in many areas.

Here's a photo of our front yard, taken a week ago. That's a 'Peaches and Cream' shrub lantana, with a white trailing lantana on the RH side.

Very nice photos, everyone! File mine in the Seen Better Days category. Although most everything is gone or going, it still has a smidgen of charm left, thanks to the red leaves of the hardy geranium in the foreground. Why does the best part of fall have to be so dang short?

It's hard to choose just one...

Tammy - that's a peony that gives us huge white flowers in the summer. The leaves get really pretty in the fall, but they're a little past their prime now. The peony came from my grandparents and I don't know its name.

Antiamo - The geranium came from my in-laws' garden and I don't know anything about it, other than it has purple flowers. I think it's probably pretty common. Sorry I'm not more help.

Carrie, I cant upstage your little pumpkin, but I had to brag a little as well,lol. This was taken by my 20 yo daughter. She has loads of talent, I keep telling her she needs to go pro, but she doesnt have the confidence. She took this at our county park just 1/2 mile away.

That settles it, Lilyfinch, we NEED a sasafras tree on our
property! Even though we won't be around until it's mature. I have access to seedlings of various sizes on the
grounds of a boarding home for the elderly where I garden
occasionally and I think I'll take a couple small ones since I've heard they're hard to move. I love the various
shapes of the leaves. I've found two tulip tree (yellow
poplar) seedlings in my flower border so November will be
the month for tree planting.

As usual, this one picture from everyone thread is a visual delight! We had an unseasonable hot October here, so Fall foliage color is virtually non-existent. Still, the blooms of the cassia and the rusty tones of the Japanese maple against the green backdrop have been very pretty this year.

Littledog...the yellow shrub behind the smoke bush is a calycanthus. Easy to care for and three season interest.

Loving everyone's autumn color, and it's great to see something from Portugal. Gotta love the internet.

This is confederate rose ~ Hibiscus Mutablis

I cut my Confederate Rose down this morning. I hope to root the four pieces. I grew it from seed, and it didn't bloom at all this year. Down the street, there's one that gets HUGE every year, 12' or taller. It's in semi-shade and blooms like crazy starting in late September.

The heleniums are still putting on a nice show here, just laughing off the frosts so far:

I have one confederate rose that blooms white to pink, but this one blooms pink to dark pink.
The white one is just now putting out buds.

No lawn, no blooms. A little color though.

Oh, that's an interesting photo, Botann. Bet it smells nice there with all the pine trees. I love that smell, though it is one of my least favorite candles scents.

It looks good to me because I thought the crop was a bust! I didn't get them thinned early and should have....that is one reason they are a little elongated, but they sure taste good.

Sorry, I just couldn't resist. For the non-vegetable gardener, they are turnips......food of the Gods (maybe a couple times a year).

glenda, I just watched Lydia's Italia (cooking show) and she cut up potatoes and turnips and cooked them with fried bacon and onions. Poured some vinegar with a bit of sugar in it over the cooking veggies so it all caramelized.mmmm sounded so good. I might have to try it and I don't eat turnips!

What a coincidence! My aunt was just telling me she sauteed (fried) hers in some oil with some onions and then sprinkled with sugar. I may have to try that. I just never thought of onions with turnips. I like to cook them with some sugar in the water, seasoned with bacon grease, a pinch of red pepper flakes and then sprinkle a little vinegar over at serving. I think I will fix that for my supper; DH won't touch them!

I don't think I have ever had a turnip in my whole life. :-) I'll have to give it a try sometime.

They are one of those things you either like or don't like. There is no in between. Very much like mustard greens.
Both of which I love.

O.K. Glenda, you've convinced me to give them another try, cooked with sugar, tossed with bacon drippings (trying to stay away from grease, drippings SOUNDS a little less like fat LOL) and some red pepper flakes. Who knows you just might have a convert here :o).
I cube and boil Rutabaga, drain, toss in some sugar, butter/marg and dill weed before I serve it. So maybe I should try your turnip fixins on Rutabaga too.

Oooops, and lets not forget the vinegar, I use vinegar on a lot of things, especially on poached eggs, yep on them, not in the water when cooking. Yummy!!!
