What to do?

I brought down a small rooted fig from NY white, I don't know the variety. I potted it in July and it took off to grow to 4-5ft tall. It started sprouting figs in Sept. but until now they have not ripened. Should I pull them off? The tree is still green with leaves and the figs are about the size of a quarter. When do figs go dormant in South Fl. I also have 3 others potted at the same time but black figs no fruit but they also have green leaves. Will they go dormant or how can I force them to go dormant. Still in the high 70's day and high 50's at night.

I'd contact the State Land-Grant College Hort. Department.
Would also help if you knew the fig variety you're dealing with. Some are more cold hardy and some are more 'tropical'.
Wow, I wish I had your problem right now!
here it is about 16 degrees and more blizzards to come.

A Sicilian uncle gave me the cuttings His figs are very productive and sweet sorry He calls them green and black. He has been growing figs for the past 70+ yrs. He told me to leave them alone but he has never dealt with this climate. I will try to contact UF.

Fantastic! Thank you guys....close to a Monstera then, but their labelling could have been somewhat better! I shall try very hard to keep up the good work (although I suspect the plant's success is more down to the plant itself than to anything I'm doing!! - maybe it just likes my windowsill.....) All outlets that support convenience plug in items within 8 feet of a water source in a kitchen must be GFI protected. It has nothing to do with when the house was built. And it's not a big deal or big expense to switch out a receptacle to a GFI-protected one. I'd switch that light switch to a dimmable one while I was at it - also not expensive, and if the electrician is going to be there, might as well have him/her do it.

When i thin the herd of plants i don't need more of i give them away on free cycle. I don't even have to meet people just bag up a bag and put their name on it and set it under the oak in the front and the people come and get the plants. One season i decided i,d had enough of a certain thug of a plant and pulled it out and gave away 8 grocery sacks of barerooted plants to 5 people with the warning the plant was a garden thug and would grow in the shade where nothing else would.

Is it possible for you to do a second cabinet base and shelves to match the other side? I would have a base cabinet and shelving added to make it look uniform then with the space remaining place a fiddle leaf plant. Hanging a long drapery panel from just below ceiling to floor would take up visual space as well.

If you are in Southern Florida, you may have some problems.
Figs do want a brief 'chill period', and most of the State seems to get that, but the southern 1/4 seems not to from the chart.

A real fig enthusiast may rent space in a walk-in fridge outfit for a couple of months to give the plants the required rest.
Well, this is the only problem we don't have.

Giants_2007:

You should probably remove the figs that were set late in the season. They will likely not ripen - even in your climate, and they will just be a needless drain on energy as long as they are on the tree. I also have some young figs that still have bright green leaves now. The young ones sometimes refuse to go dormant with the rest. Please write me at HL@comcast.net.

I just couldn't do it. So i did not remove the figs my first fig ripened on Jan 8 my birthday and was a large sweet white fig not all red inside but about half maybe I should of gave it 2 more days but what a great present. I called my uncle who gave me the cutting and he laughed and said I told you so. I also told him that the black cutting was sprouting figs and he said they probably would not be good because that was a very young cutting. Just wanted to update the progress. I guess it will take some time for these to adjust to the new climate.

thats great your getting ripe figs st this time of year !
I need to go get the snowblower as i type here and we are going to get more this evening, so hearing someone that is eating a ripe fig well thats good now that just great!
Also yes maybe like you said it was not fully ripe i know in the early part one get rather anxious to pick the first fig to eat, if you can hold back let the fig get what some call a hangmans neck where the fig drops downward as it swells in size and gets soft to touch, some fig types even get what looks like a drop of honey at the eye of the fig, if you can wait a little longer thats the best to taste.
The figs will taste better as tree matures oh yes!
If you can post any pictures that would be nice for some of us that just have snow to look at this time of year.

Thanks Martin I will try to post pictures this week. I'm probably going to need my wife's help doing so. I did save some instructions.
