Baggie method modification

I have had trouble with mold using the Baggie method

despite following all of the instructions that I have

read on this forum ,for which I deeply appreciate.

I have been experimenting with a change and

have found a method that is working well for me and

thought I might share with everyone and get any

comments from some of the more experienced fig lovers

on this forum.

I follow the traditional instructions except I put a layer

of moist Spagnum moss (not Spag.peat)on top of moist newspaper,then roll cuttings, leaving about 1/2" of

bottom of cutting exposed and secure bundle with rubber band or twistum in ziplock at 70-75 degrees (no bottom heat)and I have had no problems with rot or mold.Someone is probably doing this besides myself.Comments appreciated,

They use Sphagnum moss for cleaner spar and hot tub.

"sphagnum moss exudes or leaches (think of a tea bag leaching out the "tea") a substance that is antimicrobial in nature (think of green tea & its antioxidants) and that antimicrobial action prevents bacteria, mold & fungus from growing and reproducing."

If sphagnum moss got you through step one of the rooting process, then I think that is just wonderful. It's great to see those sticks come alive isn't it? Hopefully, your success will continue as you move them through the following steps of the rooting process.

I have perennial Rudbeckia Goldstrum. The ones that I am referring to are Rudbeckia hirta. They come by various varities such as Cappiccino, Prairie Sun, Cherokee Sunset, Irish Eyes and Denver Daisy. In my zone the occasional one will overwinter the first year if the winter is a milder one. Some gardener post them in the annual forum; others in the perennial forum. Most catalogues post them as annuals, except for a few that sell the old fashioned Black Eyed Susan's. Check Swallowtail Seeds or some other Catalogue. I'm looking for an answer to whether the Baggie Method is suitable for such small seeds. Maxyck

Like CMK, I too have had success growing Rudbeckia hirta cultivars via the winter sowing method, among them Cappucino, Cherry Brandy, Autumn Colors & Irish Eyes, as well as a number of others. I find recycled milk jugs to be more effective protection against the ravages of winter storms--ice, snow, & wind. Winter sown plants are much more robust than their nursery-grown counterparts--many of my seed-grown R. hirta cultivars have returned every year since they were first planted in 2010. Since I mulch heavily over corrugated cardboard, I'm assuming the plants return rather than self-seed.

:( those are my seedlings in that topic in 511, and they are still kicking, now have two to three sets of true leaves. what's worse i now have... pfff probably more than 40 cups of seeds germinating or already out. first i put in some known for long germination times: trinidad scorpion butch t, 7pot jonah, chocolate bhut, douglah, chocolate scorpion... and then some easier ones, limon, numex suave orange, aji panca, habanero san remo... probably some more, dunno i sow them in waves because my germination space is limited. the first group is already out, except chocolate scorpions. i've had only two seeds not germinate (out of 5 of each variety), and those were blackish to begin with so i believe they were dead in the start. i feel bad now because i feel maybe i've misled you with my pictures? i might've been just lucky with mine, who knows. i don't know what to say other than it works for me... one thing i noticed i do different from what i see recommended here, is the germination temperature. i don't have a heat mat, but i was determined to have bottom heat for the containers.then it dawned on me that my low tech fluorescent light fixture gives off heat on the top, right over where the ballasts are. so i put my containers there, avoiding the hottest spots but keeping them on the area that is 33-34 oC. that's what, about 90ish F? anyhow, even superhots germinate really fast on that. oh, and that light is on for 18 hours, and off for 6, so it cools down during that time. i think it is closer to a natural temperature cycle, maybe it suits the seeds better to have a cool period. here are some pictures, please don't laugh at my "high tech" setup :)) these are i think the 4 from the last picture and some in small cups and the lamp thingy. yeah it's not pretty but it works, and was cheaper than a heat mat :/ (was laying around broken in the garage, i fixed it). there are a bunch of cups waiting in line for the "heater" position, they just don't fit.

I know there are many folks who have had good luck with rooting roses in baggies, but I'm not one of them. The trick with rooting using any method is to keep the environment in your rooting container (in this case, a baggie) moist, but not putrid and swampy. If you have to periodically open the bag to get this to happen, then I guess opening the bag is a good idea. If things appear to be going well with the bag closed, I'd keep it closed. Rooting is a bit of a trial and error process. Once you hit on a method that works reliably, it makes you feel like Mother Nature herself. When I first started, my luck was awful. A friend told me how she uses milk jugs and soda bottles to root roses, and my life changed as I got reliably better at rooting. Dan's right about how good it feels to see those sticks turn into something alive. I also have a few cuttings in baggies with sphagnum. One of our generous members sent me some cuttings wrapped in some so I split it into two baggies and put some cuttings to root. None have shown growth yet while other in paper towels started at the same time are showing swelling buds and initials. Time will tell.

The purpose of the moist paper towel in the baggie method is to hydrate the cutting with the "water vapor" that the moist paper towel generates. You don't want to have conditions in your baggie where your newspaper or paper towel wastes its moisture in hydrating the sphagnum moss instead of the cutting. A bagged cutting which does not have enough moisture in it will greatly delay the rooting process......there is a such thing as not enough moisture. Too much can cause mold and rot....not enough moisture reaching the cutting can keep it dormant.

I use the Improved Baggie Method which recognizes the importance of controlling BOTH moisture (humidity) and TEMPERATURE control in rooting those sticks. I use plain ole paper towels and have not seen the need to use either newspaper or sphagnum moss and have established a very high success rate of turning sticks into trees. I have no problems with mold whatsoever. Failure to clean cuttings properly and/or by not utilizing steps specifically designed to help maintain both moisture and temperature control can cause mold and rot to occur.....thereby lowering your final success rate.

The best rooting method is the one that works well for you and to your satisfaction....for me that is the already proven Improved Baggie Method. That method also gives specific recommendations for the next steps in the rooting process which are more important to the final success rate of turning sticks into trees.

I had mold issues with both paper towels in baggies and sphagnum moss (it and the cutting molded). I switched to putting them in cups as I get the cuttings. I have done some in 1/2 sphagnum and 1/2 vermiculite and the rest is sphagnum/ potting mix. They seem to be rooting.

Mine are in plastic boxes (no lid on). I keep them in the shower. It has the benefits of all the humidity in the bathroom, they get checked everyday and I have no other place to keep them.
