fuschia leaf problems

Greetings,

I have a white flowered Bolivian fuchsia that I grew from seed indoors. The problem is that these weird spots appear on some of the leaves. They are beige in color (the color of a dried leaf) have a very sharp margin, and appear on the edge of the leaf 95% of the time. They tend to appear as the leaf matures. Other than that, the plant seems to be healthy and growing, but hasn't reached flowering size yet at 22 inches tall.

There are no insect pests other than the occasional fungus gnat. Is this something I should be worried about? What is causing this? How do I correct it?

90% of leaf problems with fuschias is due to lack of magnesium. Dissolve 1 T. Epson salts in a glass of hot water.

Add it to your gallon watering can and water the soil.

I've tried adding epsom salts, and the necrotic spots are still there. Could this be a virus? I have attached some photos.

Could be a fungus like Vladimir said, could also be an insect egg or just dirt on a bit of fluff. However, I'm more concerned with how dusty the leaves are. I may just be dust or it could be the beginnings of a spider mite infestation. It's a good idea to wash off the leaves from time to time, like maybe every 4-6 weeks. Take them outside and hose them off, or if that's not possible, put them in the shower and shower them off with cool water. Then let them drain well and put them back where they were. It helps prevent spider mites as they're attracted to dusty plants. And your plants love the rinsing off!

Put it outside in the shade - no more than 1 hour of full sun per day; keep it evenly moist. They hate to dry out. With the humidity we have from the lake you should be fine. Mine died last year because I let them try out once and they got gnats. I tried to keep them going but apparently I kept them just alive enough to help the gnats. Fuschia seem to be very fussy and I don't know many people around here that are able to keep them happy. (Please don't email me with advice all of you that are about to argue I am merely making a statement.) :)

Thanks for the replies! Gnappi, I'm glad to hear it's nothing to worry about. This was taken in our "winter" (if you can call it that, mostly warm this year but I suppose with it being our dry season that could've induced winter-like symptoms in the leaves as well), I'll have to remember to check out the tree to see if it's rebudding now. And I don't fertilize or water this tree at all, it's in our backyard in a line of fruit trees, mostly huge mango trees, so it gets natural rainfall and a huge amount of leaf litter from the other trees that breaks down over time. Euricolemos (nice name), I'm not so sure this is anthracnose. From what I understand of the condition, if such were the case it would affect the fruit as well? All our sugar apples from the trees in our yard are always unblemished even if the trees have leaves like this which leads me to believe it's a environmental/conditional response to something rather than an affliction. Also anthracnose is progressive yes? The leaves just keep these burned-looking margins for weeks/months at a time without dying off. Your thoughts? We have a bit of the fungus on mangoes; especially when they bloom, so I'm roughly familiar with it. How far back should I prune the branches/the tree? I don't believe they've been pruned much at all (if ever) so that sounds like a really good idea. And what should I feed it? I have some Sunniland 6-4-6 with most micros that's a granular slow-release, sounds good? Also most of our trees have grass under them, if I spread out the granular will the grass just absorb it before they tree can be fed or should I just use a heavier amount to compensate for the grass taking some? How strange but good to know. My Anna did not react to lots of rain during an El Nin~o Year that way so maybe it is a problem with Ruby only. And you did say it had rained a lot recently by KY. Question: did Heidi say that it also could be because of too much nitrogen??? Do you know what is the logic there??? Meaning how that could trigger this type growth? Odd.

i water mine with Foliage Pro from Dyna grow and it has all trace minerals in it. but as for your leaves, the damage is done, just keep an eye on the other leaves and make sure other leaves dont show these signs too.

What exactly causes the spots? Is it just a nutritional deficiency, or is it some kind of disease?

i am not 100% sure, i have never seen this on any plant i have ever grown! but what you can do is make sure that you are feeding it all the micro-nutrients it needs and remove the leaves that have the spots and see if any new ones appear. i would suggest flushing the soil with water to remove all traces of ferts in the soil. and let it dry out and start feeding with a weak fert containing micro-Nutrients each time you water. like i mentioned above i use foliage pro as it contains everything. and i add 1tblsp of vinegar to acidify the soil to assist in the uptake of all nutes.

I also make "calcium acetate" by mixing garden lime in a cottage cheese container put like 2" of lime in the bottom and fill 3/4 way with vinegar it will react and release gas so dont put the lid on till it stops fizzing(i had a disaster first time in the fridge! LOL) but the acetate contains both calcium/magnesium so no more epsom salts needed. i use this on all plants/flowers. my peppers lovve it and the acetate from what i hear will help produce blooms! i bought my fuschia from Armstrong and it had 5 flowers. after watering with 1/4tsp foliage pro, vinegar, and acetate i have about 30+ about to open.

Could the problems also be due to heat?

I have an F. splendens that is having a different problem where the leaves are curled and misshapen. It was grown from seed and it's been indoors all its life. {{gwi:786644}}
