That's a tough one. I'd have to agree though, spruce/fir over pine generally. There's just something about the tiered branching on these, and the close needle spacing, which catches and holds so much more snow.

We're supposed to get 2"-4" over the next couple of days. No biggie, but just enough to keep things looking fresh.

Hi kleckas! That is certainly one of MY favorites. How old is that specimen? Love how the horizontal branching habit and texture combine to really grab the snow. Great idea for a thread Bill.

Thanks, very helpful information for a beginner, it's hard to judge how long it will take to get a mature looking specimen.

It depends on... (follows the list of 100s of various circumstances and exceptions :).

I bought it 4 years ago. Quite large - 2 m. According to the appearance, this unlucky tree had some tough time at the nursery. Nevertheless, it established successfully and now is quite vigorous. The age is really "about" - details are not available :)

I would love to see a big glauca 'Pendula' covered in snow or ice. I can imagine that topping my list also. My little guy looks awesome with snow or ice also. Are there any wider or faster forms of glauca or other spruces that have that same look as the Pendula?

Coniferfreak - nice douglases. The ones I notice here are more open or ratty than those.

Nice nootkatensis - I love these also but probably not tops on my list for snow scenes.

Bill, great idea. I've been waiting for some more snow to take some pictures and we got about 6 inches last night.(2.54 x 6 cm :) ) It wasn't the type that really clings to the branches like I was raving about the other night, but I think these two plants look pretty good.

I guess I don't have too much experience w/ the snow. But I always loved seeing a wet snow on loblolly pines. Really nice to see the snow caked tree canopies high in the sky adding some color contrast to the drab skies!

The Nootkatensis is ok but still not tops for snow on my list
