Basic question from Newbie

Newbie question Alert.

I always thought that you plant a tree and let it grow . Why should the roots be pruned for the fig tree?

I understand that when it is cold outside you got to bring in the plant etc. But what is the point of pulling out a plant from the ground and prune it's roots and plant it back.

What does it mean when some one says that a plant is "root bound". What happens to a root bound plant.
